Electrical issue involving door locks

Mcade

Question

My door locks started going out on my 08 Sierra. I read on this site a $5 mod. I cut the gray and orange wires going into the factory door lock actuator and connected them to the aftermarket actuator. The actuator would work either up or down but not both. I then cut the green wire and tried that one. When ever the green would touch the actuator wires a i would hear a click and the actuator would move. At once the interior door lock switches stopped working. The aftermarket actuator now works fine with the remote but the door switches do nothing at all. The Driver Unlock fuse was blown but after i replaced it nothing happened. I think that at one point i shorted out the green wire. This has caused the remote start, door lock and unlock switches, to not work, the hoop open code to pop up, the door open doesnt ding, and 3 out of 4 tire psi readings dont work. Is there a component that controls all these parts? Help please!

Just want to add ... in case you need to replace the BCM, there's no need to go to a dealer - most competent garages should have programming capabilities.

You can get them pre programmed for a plug and play operation ;)

I deal a lot with BCMs but my gut is telling me your particular issues not related. Most of the times when a BCM fails you get erratic lock behavior. I'm not saying it's not a bad BCM I think I would do a little more digging personally before going down that road.

You may have spiked the BCM (body control module), sorry to say.

The door switches don't work like you'd think anymore, starting in the 2007 model year I believe. The switch sends a signal to the BCM, and the BCM is what controls the door locks, windows, etc. There is no physical connection between the door switches and the components anymore.

Probably why automakers decided to go this route. They know we'll try and figure the thing out, and burn components up in the process. Can't just throw a new BCM in either - that would be too easy! GM has to get their cut. Any new or used BCM needs to be programmed. Money paid to GM to obtain the download, into a $800+ laptop computer, through a J2534 pass-thru device (another $800+), into the DLC and into the new BCM.

It's a total racket they've engineered. And people wonder why my other 2 vehicles are over 23 years old!!!

Yes, unfortunately. Happens with ECMs / PCMs too.

Forgot to mention that there are also communication lines coming to and from the BCM to the switches - if one of those was the wire that got cut, nothing will work from the switches anymore, even if you reconnected everything as it was factory.

I don't have service data on these things, so you'll have to do some digging on the net for a wiring diagram.

I'll look in my files in the meantime in case I have one for my Silverado. Should be identical.
