Would GM give me a problem with engine warranty if i take my truck to get the oil changed somewhere else?

I done it at the dealership because the first 2 is free. And it runs about $60 plus a lot of time waiting if you dont have family to get ya. And plus they look at you funny when you tell them leave the tire psi at 60 and the trucks a 1500. Well he thought I said 50psi so its close enough.

I agree, it's a pain to go in and wait. I've been lucky to find a small town dealer near me that does great work and charges fair rates for their service. I have to work a bit to find times that are convenient but it's worth it to me.

re changing your own oil - I don't think they'd hold it against you for warranty purposes. Some dealers will require service to be done through an ASE certified mechanic in order to honor the 'lifetime warranties', but I've never had any issues getting the standard 3/36k or 5/100k warranty work on my truck when I've changed my own oil in the past.

If they give you trouble over something small then find another dealer, they are clearly not professional. If your engine throws a rod and requires replacement they might try to blame you, but ultimately if you can prove you changed the oil and didn't run it low they cannot do anything.

Change your oil anywhere but keep the receipts showing approved oil was used and when.

Keep all receipts and get serviced per owners manual. Never a problem. How do I know - was a factory rep for 23 years and ran into this problem many times. You would be surprised the bogus receipts hand made and presented to me for a blown engine at 30 k with original filter

There is actually a federal law that says they can't deny warranty because you had routine maintenance done somewhere other than the dealership. Either use a chain that keeps up with your maintenance (i.e. Jiffy Lube) or keep all of your receipts. Here is a link from the Federal Trade Commission that talks about it. https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0138-auto-warranties-routine-maintenance

Thank y'all, I didn't realize that there was a federal law involving that.

But it makes me feel better knowing i can pick up oil and filter and take it to a local shop and only spend 5-10min or so. Vs a couple of hrs.
