Electronic Steering - How do you know

Recommended Posts

I have a 2016 Silverado 2500 HD LT Model. How do I know what type of steering is equiped in my truck? I heard the many horror stories and I want to see if I have it or not. I misplaced my window sticker so I don't know what all options came with it.

any help on how to look up what is on your truck?

Gas or diesel?? Most of the LT double cab gas trucks did not get it in 2016. It was for the diesel and quad cab full size boxes etc. You should also be able to tell buy looking at your power steering box

Or vin code

HD trucks don't have electronic power steering. It is hydraulic. Some do have though, the Digital Steering Assist RPO code NV8.

Some Description and Operation of the system:

Power Steering System Description and Operation (Active Hydraulic Assist (NV8))

The Active Hydraulic Assist (AHA) system is an updated recirculating ball hydraulic power steering system that allows for some of the performance benefits of electric power steering such as variable effort steering, active return to center, active damping, and lead/pull compensation.

The original hydraulic system was retrofitted with the AHA Module, a pressure sensor, and an electric coil (electromechanical valve).

The pressure sensor is one unit with two separate detection bodies located in the left and right chambers of the steering gear. As the driver turns the steering wheel, the pressure increases on one side and decreases on the other. These pressure changes are sent to the AHA module which then decides which way to direct the hydraulic pressure.

The electromechanical control of the pressure valve allows for the additional functions in the power steering system.

What you will find it on:

2016+up Crew Cab GAS trucks (LT, LTZ, High Country).

2016+up Double Cab and Crew Cab DURAMAX DIESEL trucks (LT, LTZ, High Country).

Gas double cab and all regular cab (gas or diesel) DO NOT have NV8 (all trim levels). WT trim don't have it either.

Again note, it is still a Hydraulic assist power steering system, with an electromechanical control worked into the system.

My 2017 gasser regular cab (LT trim) does not have the DSA. I'm pretty sure all 3/4 & 1 tons have the Hydroboost set up.

I am living one of those horror stories. I have the electrical steering. My 2016 Z-71 has been declared as dangerous by the GMC dealer. It actually yanks you off of the road or into incoming traffic sporadically. The dealer / GMC have been unable to fix it and advised that I should get rid of my truck. I have had it 3,000 miles and they wanted me to trade out of it. I turn it off every time that I drive the truck. Anyone else having these problems?

1500? 2500?

Topic in this post is relative to the Digital Steering Assist on select 2500 and 3500 trucks. These trucks still have hydraulic power steering however.

If you have a 1500, those have electronic power steering, as in, no hydraulics (pump, lines, etc.). There is a giant electric motor attached to the steering rack and the assist motor is belt driven to the rack to provide power steering.

Two completely different systems.

Unfortunately I purchased the 1500 unbeknownst to me that it had this electric motor steering. My bad! Sorry. I did not see the 2500/3500.

The dealer service department can print out the "as built" sheet for any owner.

You can check the installed RPO codes on the label in the glove box.

It will have more detail than the window sticker anyway.

So from what I'm reading my truck does not have electronic assist because it is a work truck model even though it is a double cab 2016. But what is weird is everything there describing about the steering with the electronic assist seems to be happening to my truck and I have less than 16,000 miles on it
