OEM Brake Controller

Recommended Posts

I towed my 30' travel trailer this last weekend and could not lock the wheels up with the OEM brake controller in my 17' 2500 CC. I had an after market brake controller in my 1500 that would lock the trailer brakes if adjusted all the way up. The current truck will lock the wheels at low speeds but not at 25 mph where I used to adjust them. I cleaned the contacts and have the controller set to 10 (max). Anyone have a similar experience? Shouldn't they lock up with the controller on 10?

Yes, same trailer. Bigger truck handles the trailer sooo much better. I'm just concerned about the brakes not locking up and therefore not assisting enough.

I can lock both axles on any of my three trailers...I typically need to run 2.5 empty and 3.5 to 4.0 loaded. At 3.5, I slide both axles just coming to a hard stop on my small trailer.

Have you checked the trailer wiring for scotchlok connections or seen if the brakes need adjustment? Short that, I'd revisit the connection to the post on the fuse box under the hood and make sure that's getting a full 14vdc with the truck running.

You should be able to manually engage the actuator and lock the trailer up, if you have enough trailer brake to do so...I've had trailers that the wheel brakes were unable to lock the wheels up.

I had to adjust the brakes on the trailer it's self.

My 2014 had a prodigy and it locked them up.

The OEM wouldn't until I re adjusted the brakes on the trailer it's self.

Setting up the gain on my controller the other day & no problems locking the trailer brakes (21' Rockwood TT w/ Dexter axles).

Thanks all for the info. I'm going to adjust the trailer brakes and go from there. Just seems strange that the aftermarket controller on the 1500 locked them and now only a 5 mph adjusted to a max of 10

  • 4 weeks later...

The OEM controller is adaptive to the situation. I was pulling my travel trailer home and a dog ran out in front of me.

It locked all four wheels on the trailer in a panic stop.

I have brakes adjusted to just barley lock them if I hit the manual stop which is how I set up all my trailers.

So the controller way upped the power under the panic stop.

Just FWI...

Mine goes almost full lock up around 7.0 gain pulling a heavy 32' Laredo TT. Like others have said above check your trailer brake wires & adjust brake pads.

On a side note,, both my trucks a 14 1500 & my 15 HD 2500 did the same with my 32'er.

I've noticed what BigBadSierra posted. With the gain at 8 I wasn't getting lockup on the trailer using the controller but with a sharp application of the truck brakes I did get some trailer wheel lock.

Integrated controller is leaps and bounds ahead of the aftermarket one I have in my 1500.
