Wrong oil used at dealership?

Recommended Posts

So I had an issue with the truck- service air bag on the DIC. It came up about a month ago, went away on the next ignition cycle then reappeared about 10 days ago and didn't go away. Bring it in to the dealer to check it out and get a "free" oil change (I never usually do this because of the students on the lube racks). The issue with the airbag turns out to be the drivers seat pretensioner, they replace it under warranty and perform the oil change. Within two hours I'm on my way- fairly pleased with the whole event. Later this afternoon I'm reading through the paperwork and find that they list 8 quarts of 0w20 oil used. So I think you've got to be kidding and go out and check the dipstick because it could be a typo on the service order. The oil is about an inch and a quarter above the full mark! Nice! At this point they are closed and I won't have time over the next few days to go in and discuss the issue. I decide to replace the oil myself as I usually do the changes anyway. I dropped 7.5 quarts from the oil pan and replaced it with 5 and a half. They also didn't grease any fittings so I did that too.

Why do the dealerships even bother with the free oil changes if they can't even tell what their working on? From now on it will be strictly warranty as they can't be trusted to perform a simple oil change. Oh well you know what they say- if you want it done right you better do it yourself.

that is exactly why I don't take my truck to the dealerships for non-warranty related items. I have a great repair facility that knows their stuff.

I always provide my own oil and filter for my favorite local oil change place to do the oil change. I buy 2 of the 5 quart M1 containers. The new guy poured all 10 quarts (both jugs) into the truck. He did realize his mistake before fire up and owned up to it. Drained a little at a time until they got the level down and gave me 2-1 quart containers of M1. However now I am now looking for another oil change place LOL

Guarantee the lube tech was on cruise control being used to doing the new V8 1/2 ton trucks and paid no attention. He probably slapped a PF-63 on there instead of a PF-48 too.

I would definitely complain...The service dept at my dealer is top notch. I can' say I have had one compliant. Its also nice they wash and vacuum the vehicle every time.

Why even complain? They will just tell you it's no big deal and a little overfilled will not hurt anything? I have been there before on this one! They should have rotated your tires too! But they didn't and be glad they didn't because your lug nuts would have looked like a Dog chewed on those after they finished and reamed out the holes good too! Glad you got those nice shinny rims, hey?

Contact GM corp. Explain what happened. Can't fix what isn't reported.

I would think if everyone contacted GM corp with dealership issues like this that over time things would improve. But then I could be wrong.

First things first. The dealer always asks you to fill out a survey. They also have sent me an email asking how things went. I replied that the service department and advisor performed well. The quick lube on the other hand was really disappointing. I described what happened and mentioned that the lube techs should at least check the dipstick as a precaution and that I can't afford the "free" oil changes as damage caused by the quick lube will be expensive. We'll see how they respond

So the service adviser called me to try and explain what happened. He apologized and said that they definitely overfilled the engine. Kind of funny cause he said that they have a timestamp on the oil pumps and that they put 6.5 qts of 5w30 in and it calls for 4.8qts?? Really? They have a timestamp on the oil pumps but can't connect it to the servuce order?? I said that I removed the oil and measured 7.5 qts from the oil pan so I don't know where the extra quart came from That's not even including the oil filter which I didnt remove. Which is a PF 63 by they way and shouldn't really be a problem. They say they take complaints seriously and would like to make it up to me. With that they will give me another "free" oil change to make up for their mistake. Well button your shirt your heart's falling out! Free oil changes I really don't need. I would like a trustworthy dealer though. I do have a buddy who owns a service shop that I help out at on occasion so getting oil changes and service after warranty is not a problem. Overall this is really a first world problem and it doesn't really bother me. I just feel for the people who don't know better and have to depend on this kind of service.

Sounds like they are trying to make things right and hopefully keep it from happening again.

You can always just ask if they will provide the oil and filter for free for an oil change.

The one dealership I dealt with that I purchased my Cruze from is 75 miles from me. I said it isn't worth me driving all that way for a free oil change and asked if I could just get the oil and filter. They said no problem and gave me the oil and filter for one oil change.

WoW! I never go back to the dealer and there's no such thing as a free oil change. When my wife bought her G6 it came with a free oil change. She insisted I bring it to the dealer for the free oil change. Well I watched the grease monkey do the oil change from outside the bay. Then I invited the Service supervisor to have a look at the filter as I removed it from the cup. Never seen such a bumbling idiot trying to find excuses for the crumpled filter. Never went back.

IMO

In today's world there just is not enough training and supervision, cost money. This applies to all businesses IMO.

Most times I know more about what I'm buying than the sales person. :happysad:

when I have had the oil changed at the dealership in the past, and when I watch the lube bay guys doing their work while waiting to pick up or drop off my truck for warranty work, Everytime they finish filling, they wait about 2 min and do some clean up work and paperwork and then come back and check the oil on the dipstick, I always nodded at that and made it a point to tell them thanks for doing that extra step. They said that was how they were trained.

The oil changes that GM includes are put thru as warranty and can be done at any GM dealer.
