33" tires with 3.42 rear?

Recommended Posts

I know it's been talked about to death on various forums but I'm starting to get nervous that the 275/70/18 Cooper AT3's I've got sitting at the house will be too much for my 3.42 rear. I never go off-road. Mostly just town and some highway. Will I be ok or will I ruin the tranny or rear end? Any solid help is greatly appreciated.

3.42s are probably the best all around gear ratio for both daily driving and towing. They will have no problem with 33s, probably won't even notice a difference since it's only a 2" difference and the ratio is low enough. Now if you had those dumbass 3.08s then I could understand your concern. Even 3.08s could handle 33s, it would just feel like it had even less low end torque.

Also from my understanding, the weight of the rims and tires aren't really a big issue to get going. It's more of being able to slow down.

I have 3.42 gears with 35s. No issues on 15k+ miles of running them. It doesn't brake as strongly as it did before when towing. The weight of the wheels also takes a little off the acceleration. It's still got plenty of get up and go. I haven't felt like I need to re-gear. Even when towing a 5k lb boat, with the bed and cab loaded, up a 7% grade by my house. You should be fine on 33s.

How much that cost ya & what parts did you use?

Parts were around $900. I got them from East Coast Gear Supply. Parts were 4.10 ring and pinion that included the Pinion seal, Pinion nut, and Crush Sleeve #GM9.5B-410-OE , Ring Gear Spacer allows use of 3.42 or 4.10 GM9.5B gears on 3.08 carrier #GM9.5B-RG-SPACER , Reverse Ring and Pinion #GM8.25IFS-410R-OE , GM 8.25 IFS Open Carrier 8.25" standard open carrier case 3.42 & up gear ratio #GM8.25IFS-CASE-E. Now I ended up buying the mini install kit. But I ended up having to buy a bearing and some other parts that were missing. May just want to get the main kit.

Thanks man! Do you have the 6.2 or 5.3? I can't decide to do 3.73s or 4.10s. I'm on the 4lane and interstate frequently. So, I think 410s would be too much, gas mileage would be terrible.

I'll probably stick with 33s
