HELP clunking noise in rear of truck 5 months in shop

Recommended Posts

I have 2017 GMC denali sierra pickup crew cab 6.2 4 wheel drive . My truck has had a clunking noise in rear of truck from the 1st day i pick up truck when i hit a bump . It doesn't do it all the time an only notice it at low speed below 35mph . The dealer and GM have replace rear springs , replace whole rear axle ,differential , re torqued springs , checked running boards tire mount . When they replaced rear end now it has a vibration around 70-80 mph, when i back out of drive way in morning up a slight grade it acts like its locked then all of sudden jumps back and spins tires.

My question is has anyone had this problem with clunking noise over bumps and were they able to fix problem

The last time dealer kept truck for 3 1/2 months trying to fix problem and waiting on new rear end .

Have they checked, and have ruled out your "slip yoke" spline is binding! This could be your issue here!

This will make a clunk sound sometimes while starting off, and stoping, and it sometimes will feel as if your truck has been tapped from behind by a car!

Also your vibration may now be related to pinion angle not correctly set from the rear end replacement.

Worth a look at these known issues.

Google "slip yoke GM problem"

Good luck

I haven't known any 2014+ with a slip yoke problem, this problem existed in the older model trucks years ago.

There has been many people with this problem still, in fact the new "yoke" propeller shafts have a nickle coating to alleviate this known issue but still the issue is active for many. Drop your driveshaft use a small amount of anticease paste retest, and your issue should be gone!

Good luck

My problem is only when i hit a bump and the clunking noise is coming from rear of truck sounds like passenger side rear. They have not changed shocks that i know of . The size of the bump doesn't seem to matter its more the right kind of bump and speed of 20-30mph . I feel that is is when wheel drops , but can't be sure . I was hoping that someone else has had this problem and can shed some light on issue .

I think that "antiseize paste" might work a little better.

Reading through this thread, I am amazed that GM seems to be just throwing parts at the OP's truck to prove that they tried to fix the problem. The yoke on the propeller shaft is a well known issue and GM should have fixed this a long time ago. Instead they insist on making and installing sloppy tolerance parts on these trucks.

No they still do it, in certain conditions i still get slip yoke clunk from time to time though i have basically dealt with it on my 95 zr2 and 05 silverado so after 20+ years i'm almost conditioned to it. The op though has a noise going over bumps which is not the slip yoke and imo something else suspension related more then likely.

Yes anti-seize paste not anticease paste, thankyou for the correction!

Dealership finally fixed clunking noise in rear of truck . After replacing rear springs , torquing to specs , replaced complete rear end and none of this fixed the problem . Last resort replaced shocks noise is now gone . I believe the shock on right rear was dropping down fast and over extending causing clunking noise . Thanks to who ever suggested shocks as problem

<---------Raises hand

And yeah i agree your dealer rocks to go that far to make you happy, kind of funny though they did all that before looking at the cheapest fix which are the shocks, unless of course you have the mag ones.

That is the tell all.....noise when the wheel drops! I get it vehicle owners are not always mechanically inclined or knowledge about their vehicles and that is "OK" The dealership on the other hand has no excuses.......Clunk in the back/rear of vehicle? The last thing to "F" around with is everything they "F" around with? Start with the 15.00 dollar Rancho's bro! I am sorry unnecessary your tech on the trucks should be fixing toilet roll holders and not Denali's
