Preventive Maintenance

Recommended Posts

Just rolled over 60k in my 2014 Silverado 1500. When I took it to the dealership for some minor body repairs they told me that I should drain and flush the transfer and differential fluids. Is this something I should spend money doing? Also is there anything else I should do?

I would. I am a little more goofy about such things. I change out all drive train lubes by 10,000 miles, then do it every 50,000 miles after that. All it takes is seeing the transfer case magnetic plug on the first change to convince anyone that it is a good idea. On both my 2013 1500 and my 2015 2500, the transfer case plug looked like my cat had got its tail stuck in a light socket. Lots of wear metals on the plug. Not so much the other components, but was noticeable. And that was at 10,000 miles.

While trans and filter can be difficult for some, doing transfer and diffs is so easy almost any novice can do it. Far cheaper than having a shop do it. My time is too valuable to spend time on the trans, but I can have both diffs and transfer fluids changed out in an hour on my own. I use a shop in town to change trans and filter.

Look in the extreme service part in the manual unless you drive lots of Hwy miles and that should give you peace of mind. I drove around 50K miles a year and used reg service section. After the warranty period I went extended with synthetic. 40 years and about 15 pickups of experience, no issues.
