Diagnosing a Brake Problem

Recommended Posts

I'm just checking to see if I'm on the right track. I have a 2015 Sierra 1500 AT with 55K miles. The brake pedal feels spongy and I can feel a slight shake when I hit the brakes. I don't feel or see any vibration in the steering wheel. That makes me think I might have a warped rear brake rotor. My plan is to have the rear rotors resurfaced and drive the truck a while. If resurfacing fixes it, I will probably order new rotors and pads because, in my experience, rotors will usually warp again pretty soon after they've been resurfaced. Does that make sense? Should I look at something else before I remove the rotors? Thanks.

OK. I decided to go for it. I took the rotors off and tried to have them turned. One was fine, but the other was too thin in some places to be turned. I bought and installed new rotors and pads. All is well now.

Now I have a new question. It seems odd to me that I had to service the rear brakes first. I've never had to do that before. I'm thinking the front brakes can't be far behind. I'm looking at front rotors a d pads on Amazon. I see A.C. Delco "Police" rotors that would supposedly fit my truck. I assume they're a little thicker and would handle heat better without warping. Does anyone know anything about these rotors? Thanks

About 50K I started have a vibration when braking down from 70 and up quick at highway exits. Got new rotors and pads. Put a dial indicator on the rotors and found the driver side only out .003" and the passenger side out .005", so I was pretty sure this was going to fix it. After I replaced my brake fluid and the rear was black at first and the front fluid was all clean. Guess these need a rear brake upgrade more than the front.
