Sunoco now a Top Tier gas

Recommended Posts

Not really. It's only the UltraTech grade not all 4. All their other grades still don't meet TopTier specifications.

Thanks for the heads up...I've filled up once or twice with Sunoco because i thought I'd read somewhere Sunoco was Top Tier. I didn't have a good feeling about it (cashier had no idea what Top Tier was) though and try to only full up with Chevron in my area. I also read on the Top Tier website that Valero was Top Tier, but for some reason don't feel good about that one either. If somebody can set me straight, that would be great, because I pass lots of Valero stations to get to a Chevron.

Yeah have to wonder what Sunoco is up to, they are in the process of selling to 7-11 for 3.3 billion. I beleave they are selling something like 1100 corporate stores and only keeping 250ish franchise locations. It still has to go through the FTC though

Sunoco is more expensive around here. 20 cents more per gallon for premium vs the other places. I get my gas at Valero, they have a label right on the pumps claiming to have Top Tier gas.

There are a lot of Sunoco on the east coast...I'll be watching this for updates. It would be nice to run their gas...

I knew they were trying to sell their retail stores, 7-11s tend to suck, which isn't looking good for Sunoco if they do go through with the sale.

DALLAS, Feb. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Sunoco Ultratech, a high detergent fuel blend, will be available to customers starting April 1, 2017 across all grades of gasoline at every Sunoco station across the country.

-------

A high detergent fuel blend (the same levels as NASCAR fuel) that significantly exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gasoline detergency standards. Beginning April 1, 2017, Sunoco UltratechTM will be available to customers across all grades of gasoline at every Sunoco station across the country.

------

February 22, 2017

Today, more than 50 fuel brands are Top Tier certified, representing about two-thirds of fuel sold in the United States and Canada.

One of the two newest brands to join the certification program is Sunoco LP’s Sunoco Ultratech, which will be available at all its branded sites across all gasoline grades, beginning in April.

and so on - Ultratech is a new name used by Sunoco to describe their fuels and 'Ultratech' and 'Top Tier' apply to all grades of Sunoco fuel.

BTW, I have no association with Sunoco. I only read this and thought it was worth passing along as we have an abundance of Sunoco stations in SC - and the price of their gas is the same as or even less expensive than other brands, Top Tier or not.

Bob,

I'm not trying to argue with you -- I just want the right info out there.

It is true that all Sunoco fuels that are branded as "UltraTech" will be TopTier certified.

What those press releases don't explain is that not all Sunoco fuels will be labeled "UltraTech". Yes UT will be available in all grades but that will not be standard. So if you want TopTier fuels from Sunoco you need to make sure you get the "UltraTech" one in the grade you are buying. The "standard" versions of each grade will not be called UltraTech and do not include all the same detergents/additives and so will not be TopTier certified.

Confusing I know -- but it will let Sunoco look like they are offering better fuel than the competitors (and I bet you will see them charge more for it). Many people will drop by Sunoco and buy the cheapest grade thinking they are getting cleaner gas but that will only be true if they make sure they pick the "UltraTech" version.

See below, unless I missing something, this indicates "all grades" at "every Sunoco station" -so this would seem to mean we are all set right?

DALLAS, Feb. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Sunoco Ultratech, a high detergent fuel blend, will be available to customers starting April 1, 2017 across all grades of gasoline at every Sunoco station across the country. The introduction of Sunoco Ultratech is the company's latest effort to provide customers with the high quality fuel they've come to expect from Sunoco.

"This is an exciting announcement for the company and our customers," said Mark Burford, senior director of marketing strategy and design at Sunoco LP. "Customers tell us that they highly value the increased engine efficiency and durability benefits that may result from the regular use of high detergent fuel. With the introduction of Sunoco Ultratech, customers will have the same detergent level as Sunoco NASCAR fuel, continuing our tradition of high quality products."

Sunoco Ultratech meets the demanding specifications of the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Program, which was developed by eight automakers including BMW, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Top Tier's enhanced gasoline detergency helps keep engines clean and ensure compliance with tighter vehicle emissions and engine durability requirements

It's all about the wording in that press release. Notice it says:

will be available ... across all grades

It will be available but it will not be standard in each grade. That's the difference. Like I said each grade will have UltraTech available and that version will be TopTier certified but the "standard" versions will still be available in each grade and they will NOT be TT certified. So there will be something like:

Sunoco 89 Octane

Sunoco UltraTech 89 Octane (TopTier certified)

Sunoco 91 Octane

Sunoco UltraTech 91 Octane (TopTier certified)

and so on for each grade

That's all I was trying to point out -- you will need to make sure you select the UltraTech version of the grade you are getting if you want the TopTier detergents.
