Today's youth rant...

StillOffshore

Recommended Posts

So, I work offshore...on a boat. I'm a sailor. Supposed to be a "manly" profession, alas, anyone is allowed these days. I've never run into such a string of crybaby, lazy, clueless deckhands in my life. These kids want anyone else to do their job...then they complain that the captains make more money than they do. They rush to do the bare minimum amount of work, do it halfassed at best, then RUN to the nearest device with internet and video games. The lack of respect for others and their SUPERIORS is insane. I've never had some green hand talk to me the way these kids do. They don't understand why it's not okay to speak to me like I'm their buddy online playing COD. God help us. America is going down with this generation of fools.

Totally agree. I am apart of this horrible "generation" and I got the belt more times than I could count and I turned out better than the ones who just got time out corner.

I'm 30 and unfortunately part of this generation as well... I played 3 sports in high school, had a full time summer job, always was helping grandpa on the farm, worked all through college, and moved out on my own the week after graduated college. My parents gave me a free roof over my head and food on the table only if I got good grades and worked hard. At the time I know I bitched and moaned plenty, but I'm so glad they made me be responsible. I respect the things I own, respect the degree i achieved, and respect the hell out of my family for raising me the right way. I also was a hell raiser and you are damn sure I knew the consequences of my actions.

I get so worked up when I see people my age and younger have mom and dad pay their way though school just to party and get a theater or peace studies degree. Then they expect to come out of school and make $100,000 a year, get 2 weeks vacation, and half days every Friday. The same damn generation hurries to the street to protest for raising minimum wage, hate on police, scream fascist at our president, demand free healthcare, block streets, block free speech, and vandalize property.

There are a lot of good folks in our generation, but it sure seems like these other asses steal the limelight. Sorry for my rant, I'm just tired of being part of the generation that is kicking America in the teeth... My wife is a teacher and I hear it all.

back in the early 90s I had to (got to) learn how to work by picking stones and baling hay on grandpa's farm. I was thrilled to get paid $5 an hour and lunch included.

nowadays, you can't get a teenager off the couch for less than $20/ hour, and as you stated, even then they barely work.

I mean, I'm 36, but damn...I am the man in charge on my boat, yet, I seem to be the one doing the most manual labor. These jackalooms have zero drive, respect, common sense...they do have this crazy entitlement thing going on. I've worked my way up scrubbing toilets, chipping, painting...the whole nine. Why does a deckhand with 3 years of experience NOT KNOW HOW TO SPLICE A LINE??????? Try to teach them, and they're on the phone halfway through the "lesson" busy texting. Then the attitude they catch when I tell them they'll learn better if they pay attention.

Sorry everyone, just venting.

After 25 years USN and now retired I saw it all. Toward the end of my career the bluewater Navy(ships, sailors) were the whineyest bunch of babies. It from 10% to 30% useless in 5 years. I always am thankful I was part of NSO instead of the bluewater side. Generation Intitlement

There are some good ones left. You just have to weed through them and toss the entitled ones in the trash like a dirty diaper. We keep the hard workers that recognize that they are not really having to work hard if they work smart. Those that stick around and do a good job are compensated very well,

I take it that you are the boat captain, or at least the #1 deck hand. Hate to say it, but if you are having those problems, its YOUR fault. Have a meeting with them and be clear of your expectations. Having rules such as no cell phones during working hours would be a good start. If they can't follow the rules, fire their ass. After the first one loses their job, the others will get the message loud and clear.

Have a class on ropes, how to splice, knot tying, etc. As long as you do the work that they dont/wont do, then you will always be the one carrying the load.

These guys may be your personal friends, or relatives, but business is business. Unless your company has an HR dept that has you hog tied, you should be able to fix this in about 48 hours.

Note, I use to work offshore so I know how the politics work first hand. I realize that there are many variables that can throw a monkey wrench in my suggestions. I also learned way back when that if I was not happy with a company, there was many other looking to hire a good hand. I would not work for someone that did run a tight ship.

Good Luck!

Unfortunately, I have an HR department that is more concerned with the cost to hire new hands. I've written up so many hands it's ridiculous. The deckhands have learned that they won't get fired, just rotated to other boats...worst case. Usually nothing happens. Not many companies are hiring right now. Pretty bleak in the oilfield.

You're 100% correct, it is my fault. At the same time, I take pride in my boat and want it looking nice, so I end up doing the majority of the work. I just find it sad that these entitled kids find no issue with the boss doing their job.

I have called my office numerous times to get rid of these kids, but they start to think I'm the issue. The office just sees dollar signs attached to firing and hiring new hands.

You are stuck in a very bad position with an HR department that will not back you up due to hiring cost. Sounds like they don't want to do their job either.

I am going to be out of town for a few days, but shoot me a PM with your contact information. I have a friend that is a captain that lives down the street from me but catches out of Morgan City (I think). I will pass on your info and see if he has any leads on a better opportunity. < HR Buzz words.
