Cruising Speed

What's your preferred highway cruising speed?

I've got a 6.0 3/4 ton I cruise 66mph on the highway empty or full. I'm getting passed by guys hauling 5th wheels! Speed limit is anywhere from 70-75 on the interstate...65 for semis.

Lots of RVers run at the hy speed. In most cases the truck rules don't apply to them anyway.

Stay in the slow lane and I will wave when I pass you

Interstates, 55 mph regardless unless posted lower like construction sites. Primary US highways 50 mph. Primary State highways depends on traffic some but 45 to 50 mph. Secondary and county blacktops. 45 mph or less depending on terrain. I NEVER drive gravel or dirt roads. There is a big difference between Kansas and West Virginia backroads. :)

I gave up worrying about who is passing me our how many do. I drive 50 and get passes constantly. I use to drive 85 mph and got passed constantly. Same rude gestures. :fingersx: Same flashing lights. Same long faces. Same honking horns.

It dawned on me one day these upset people are the same upset regardless of what I'm doing. :idiot: They don't by my gas, my tires or my brakes. They don't make my payments or buy my insurance. They don't eat at my house and they are not interested in my safety or comfort. If they wish to be like this no matter what I do....I like 28 mpg instead of 17 mpg. I like 100K brakes and 80 K tires. :driving:

These trucks handle way better than my Wrangler. The jeep is why I developed the 66mph cruise habit (the things is a sail). I like the extra MPG too and love driving the truck so don't mind the added windshield time.

What is it with fords blowing smoke at me as they drive by though?!

People always in a hurry. Ever notice overweight folks in the most hurry? Or racing to get to a job that you know people hate. I drive 5 mph over. Bout it. Racing around like a rat make you one of the rats....in a elfin maze(Rancid)

If you drive fast or slow people are going to complain either way. Some days I prefer to open things up and use more right pedal and others I like to take in the sights and slow it down. Do what pleases you and enjoy life.

As I am getting older (47) I fimd that I like going a bit slower and taking in the sights more and more. You're absolutely right about people will pass you even at 100mph+. I generally do the limit as everybody usually goes 10 over, I won't be the one getting speeding tickets. And I couldn't care less if they are upset, that's their problem. I'd do what makes you happy- I do and like it!☺

I usually run 62-63 on regular two lane roads, (Dad used to tell me that was the optimum mpg speed when he commuted back and forth). The four lane state road from home to town, usually 68ish. On the interstate, I usually run about 72-73. Doesn't seem like anything changes mileage tho.

I usually set the cruise around 5 MPH over the legal limit. It's nice to be able to cruise along and enjoy the ride without having to watch for police. I also don't tend to drive much over 75 MPH when empty, or pull my camper much over 70 MPH, regardless of the speed limit.

I do the speed limit. That way I'm not the idiot flying by with their hair on fire, nor the **** everyone has to pass because they are doing 50 in a 75 mph zone. Neither of these people are safe on the freeway, and especially on two lane roads that require you to pass on incoming traffic.

Towing, I drive the speed limit. If the load is heavy or a camper, I drop 5 mph or so.

Inclement weather, drive for the conditions.

Usually close to 5 over speed limit. Even in the carpool lanes, folks try to ride up on my bumper thinking that's a different speed lane. I keep my speed or I'll break check you if you're riding my bumper, usually they get the hint and go around.. Lol

I've had my share of folks sitting in slow to stand still traffic just pulling into the carpool lane and almost getting crushed.
