New Life Style - RURAL LIVING - Why Did We Wait So Long?

The wife and I are both from small towns and have lived in the city for years.

We have been in our mountain home full time for a while now. It's 15 minutes to town, 3 miles of dirt road. Wild life and stars. QUIET!

Some info and maybe a little bragging.

Love the house and the garage, 36 x 40. Like the slower pace, the cooler temps, no traffic lights(unless we go to the big town)and no traffic.

We're on a cul-de-sac on a dead end street(posted no outlet) with one other house about a 1/4 mile away. No cars pass the house unless they are lost(1 so far) or have business here, deliveries(UPS) or the water meter reader, electric meter reader or propane delivery. :happysad:

That sounds perfect! Glad you're happy. The older I get the more living in a secluded area appeals to me... And I live in the country so to speak now. Although I would love a dead end road and a mountain view. Congrats!!

Glad you are enjoying it. I'm in your same boat. I grew up 15 minutes drive from the nearest stoplight. I love the peace and space out in the country.

But there are some benefits to being close to restaurants, grocery, home improvement stores. My wife and I just purchased a 7 acre lot on a dead end road that is 3 miles away from Costco, Buffalo Wild Wings and Starbucks on the edge of Green Bay. Can't wait to build our house there and have the best of both worlds.

I am seeming way out there.

45F at 4 this morning.

A town we moved to 30 years ago.

grandma is gone, an uncle, my mother, and friends.. family moved, land lost.

A neighbor that lived across the street was my age just passed a few days ago.

beyond the silence, it made me who I am. If I was a city rodent and stepped up to the military plate like I did years ago.. I'd be dead of it were not for the rural leap.

Cannot bullshit strength or weakness or truth or lies.

I had lungs that went beyond, a voice, and stamina.

I came back here as a disabled vet, the only public housing building in the town of 700...36 miles north of bangor maine.

the ride alone revives memories on all the vehicles I kept and made myself. Thousands of times back and forth all a maine year.

Rural is not a magazine cover. It is much more serious than that.

I grew up in the city and still in suburbs city and its great to buy things and go out and eat but I'm tired of the city myself.Im 43 and longtime girlfriend is mid 30's and starting this year I planned on moving out of the city but don't think she is ready.I think we may have to wait a few years till oldest finish school and make the move. The new plan is try to find something more peaceful till then for a few years and move way out to freedom.congrats.

I grew up in a small town, 1/4 acre lot, lived in apartments for about 3-4 years then we bought an acre in the outskirts of town, then last year 3-1/2 acres in a rural township but, we're close to a medium sized town (8-10mins to home depot / target or wally mall) it's really the best of both worlds but, I'd prefer to be about 1/2 hour or so from civilization when I move next time I'm shooting for 10+ acres... We love being away from town all the lots in our twp are a minimum of 2 acres but, most are 3-10 in our area with a few at 50+

Life is full of compromises. We are 45 mins. from Wall Mart, major chain grocery store, auto stores, etc. 1.5+ hours from Home Depot but have a local Ace.

We plan on monthly trips for things not available locally and some things will be forgotten or become a treat because of availability.

The trade off is well worth it IMO.

I was in that boat, grew up in rural PA, moved to NE Philadelphia...talk about a culture shock. I'd been slowly moving back to rural PA, and about seven years ago we bought a foreclosed property of three acres and abutting agricultural preservation zoned properties (no chance of being built against). We're in a flag shaped development, so very little traffic. And the best part is I'm ten minutes from Walmart, Cabelas, and Lowes and 20 minutes from Reading with everything else...

That us one thing I can't stress enough, find a property you like and the first thing you do is research the zoning! I looked at one property and the Township had rezoned it to commercial /industrial and now that house has a Walmart warehouse in its backyard!
