Truck won't start in park. Has to be in "N"

Recommended Posts

The truck won't start in park you have to turn key on then to N then it will start. You can't shift truck to park either with key on. You have to go to N then turn truck off and then to park to pull keys. What is wrong?

Try to adjust the shift cable and of course check the cable bracket and cable itself. Several youtubes out there here is one..........

could be a faulty neutral safety switch at the steering column.

I'm not 100% certain if there are any electronic components on the steering column that would cause that issue but I do know the Neutral Safety Switch is located on the transmission on these trucks.

I would start with cable as previous have said the go to safety switch on Transmission. Brake switch not a concern here. Can get it out of park.

I helped a friend with a similar problem on a 2000 K1500 HD. It had a rotary switch that went around and was actuated by the shaft going into the transmission where the shift cable connects. Replacing the switch assembly fixed it.

It's called a "Neutral Safety Switch / Range Sensor". It looked like this
