Ignition wiring

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a 94 Sierra as a work truck, but it's got tons of problems. At some point, someone installed a push button starter, I'm guessing because the ignition on the column turned without a key. I really don't know. Anyway, I had to take the dashboard off to fix the A/C, and I figured I may as well rewire the ignition with a new lock cylinder while the whole thing is taken apart. I've got the lock cylinder in place, but I'm having trouble tracing the wires.

The engine was replaced with a 5.7L, but I have no idea what it originally had. There are several connections just hanging loose, which I'm assuming is because of the engine swap, but again, no idea. I've got the Haynes book with wiring diagrams, but it's not helping much. Several wires have been replaced with different colors than the original, etc. I can take some pics if that would help, but I'm not even sure where to start. I did notice the pink wire under the steering column is looped back into the same bracket to bypass. The wire to the starter motor/solenoid near the bottom of the engine is blue with a red stripe.

Thanks for any advice, pics of how the wiring is supposed to look, etc.

Update: I've managed to trace several wires, using a multimeter. I can trace a pink wire from the distributor to the box on the firewall (driver's side, under dash, sort of behind the parking brake pedal). I get continuity when I hook one end of the multimeter to the distributor and the other end to the port circled in red.

So now I need to figure out what wire is supposed to be plugged in there and where the other end is supposed to be. I also found a pic someone posted in a different thread, with that pink wire I found looped into the same connector, so I guess it's supposed to do that.

Next, I've traced a purple wire from ignition to pcm, but not sure where it's supposed to go after that. The wiring diagram has a purple wire going directly from ignition to starter motor, so I'm assuming it should be from pcm to starter motor.

If anyone has any information or pictures that could help, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!
