Can anyone tell me what kind of upper control arms these are?

Recommended Posts

Looking at getting the RC 2" level, but as y'all know I have to identify my UCA's. I don't have a magnet handy and unfortunately the black color might be undercoat (doubt it though) so I thought I'd post these pics. Let me know if there's anything else I can do. My service/parts dept says now they replace all UCA's with either stamped or cast steel (forgot which one) so it doesn't tell them which originally came on the truck. Thanks y'all.

Looks steel to me. The only difference in the leveling kit between the 2 is the length of the bolts they provide anyway. Aluminum LCAs are a bit thicker, so the bolts are longer.

Yeah a buddy of mine had a magnet on him and we just tested it, they're definitely steel. And yeah I've posted on here before that even though it's a 2WD it's far from a pavement princess haha. Steel probably explains why it survives the ditches and bumps I put it through so well. I could use the extra clearance. Probably gonna try 34's next tire set to haha.

There's 2 types of step arms. Ypu.have cast steel. The other is stamped steel. Plus you can usually.tell by when your truck was made early 2016 and back was cast steel. 16.5 to current is stamped

Any inherent benefit to the owner, cast vs stamped? Vs aluminum?

No functional difference. Although I've heard some guys talk about wheel/tire clearance issues with control arms. I don't know if there's a clearance issue with the aluminum A-arms, but it's damn close with my 18 x 9 wheels and forged steel A-arms..

GM went from cast steel, to cast aluminum to now stamped steel. 17s should all be stamped steel

Other than cost savings, why would they change twice in such a short period of time Weight reduction, resource availability ... :dunno:

Price of aluminum went up and/or they figured out how to stamp the steel arms properly? ‍♂️

Looking at my control arms and judging by Rough Country's website and descriptions, I have Cast Steel Arms, which have been used since 2007. Apparently stamped steel and aluminum were used in the interim (aluminum from 2014+ and stamped steel from 2016+) and probably still periodically, and Cast Steel are are still used. Threads of this discussion have confirmed that it's 100% random what arms you get.
