6L80E Transmission Fluid/Filter Change

Recommended Posts

My vehicle is a 2015i Yukon 5.3L with the six speed. I haven't seen this documented on the new models. So I thought it might help some looking to change all the fluid and replace the filter in their transmission. It's similar to the older models with a couple differences. My last vehicle was a GMT800, which will be my reference.

Fluid I used

I used the trans cooler lines to evacuate the fluid and refilled through the dipstick.

First, identify the trans cooler lines.

Here's where they exit the trans on the driver side.

...and cross under the trans to the passenger side...

...then split just in front of the engine.

I discovered the pass side gets fluid from the trans.

See where fluid is coming from cooler line instead of cooler.

I moved the lines to the driver side so I could also capture the fluid in the coolers.

The lower port on the radiator sends fluid back to trans.

I ran the engine and let the trams pump most of the fluid from the pan so I could drop it without a mess. I knew the exhaust y-pipe would prevent pan removal. So I unbolted it from both manifolds. It dropped down just enough.

Removed the 10mm pan bolts and dropped the pan.

Not too dirty for 30k miles.

Pan had a film of metal slurry on the bottom and a few small shavings in the filter.

So fresh and so clean clean

I buttoned everything up down below and filled then flushed 4 quarts at a time until the fluid ran pink.

Bring the fluid up to temp and top off to the correct level.
