Which year Sierra 1500 to buy used?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've read a lot of good information on here so I'd figured I would ask a question. I have a 2006 GMC Sierra with 288k and it is the best truck I've ever bought, however, I feel it is time to switch to a newer Sierra. I'm looking for a 2014, 2015 or 2016 Sierra 1500 with the 5.3L AWD and Crew Cab. Which model year is better as far as bugs and issues and why do you recommend it?

Thanks

Thanks for the info, I think power train wise they are the same but I'm not sure which model to get.

If you are shopping 6.2, they are 8L90 (or A8 as some refer to) transmission 2015 and up. 2014 they were 6L80 (A6). Really the only major change powertrain wise. 5.3 is going to be the 6L80 2014-2016. If you go 5.3, find one with 3.42 gears.

Thank you very much, what other rear axle ratios are available on these?

On 5.3 its 3.08, 3.42, and with NHT max trailer only its 3.73. 6.2 with the 6L80 will be 3.42 standard, 3..73 with NHT max trailer only. 6.2 and 8 speed its 3.23 standard, 3.42 with NHT max trailer.

very little practical differences between the years. I would say the best year by a very slim margin would be a '16. Since it has the newer front end but not the performance trans tuning issues of the '17, which may not be an issue at all if you never want to tune.

I personally wouldn't care what year, just go with the best deal you can find.

2014 & 2015 FTW. You get removable cup holders, red backlighting, 3 USB ports, and a 6 speed.

Seriously though, I do prefer those small differences on my truck than the newer ones. But in all honesty you're better off with a newer truck. Less bugs (mine didn't have many tbh) and you get the led/hid lights. Lots of guys have issues with aftermarket hids for some reason.

2016, had a 14 Silverado, and now a 16. The 16 has been a much nicer trouble free truck.

I got a great deal on a 2014 Certified Pre Owned Sierra. I have only had it 6 months but no issues as of yet and if I do encounter one then the warranty has my back. Just do your research and find the best deal. I actually flew to get this truck, it was the best deal I could find online and in person shopping.

I have those in my 16. Cup holders don't really need to be moved IMO and I've never used the USB ports in my 14 or 16. They didn't change the back lights till 17 and I guess I was one of the few to get the 6 speed with my SLT.

As for the OP I'd stick with a 15 or newer Sierra as the 14s seem to be showing their 1st model year problems. I had a 14 with no issues I just wanted a crew cab when my son was born.
