Shifting

Recommended Posts

I have always been a chevy person and also have a zo6. My current 2016 midnite edition with a 5.3 is always searching for a gear. I have had it to the dealership and they said that is the way it is. It really irritates me that I have to spend $500 on a dyno tune to get a almost $48k truck to shift properly. Any other suggestions? Truck has a cat back and AFE momemtum gt cai.

Mine has about 14k miles on it. Sometimes I get in it and it will shift perfectly for the whole morning, then I get in it that afternoon to drive home and it shifts like a hunk of crap. Lurches forward on the downshift, some of the upshifts are harsh, especially the 1-2 and 2-3 shift. It almost has a Jekyll/Hyde personality.

Mine is a 2016 5.3L/6 speed.

I did the diablo tune as well, and had Lew complete the tune. While it did help in some regards, it made other things worse. The engine tune was very good, but I still got some very clunky upshifting and didn't care for the firmer shift pressures in city driving.

Do you know if upshift torque management is turned off? The first time I tuned I turned this setting off. Shifts seemed sloppy. Turned it back on and it got better.

This is what Mike on the DiabloSport forum told me:

"We often recommend leaving the upshift abuse mode TM enabled as it can lead to sloppy shift feel when disabled, as you may have discovered. TM on the engine side is already disabled in the tunes."

Great question, and yes it was on.

Did the tune help at all? Do you think it was worth the $$$$?

Did it help? Yes.

But was it worth it? Honestly if you're not adding headers, blower/turbos, or 35"+ tires, I'd say don't worry about it.

I believe the learn mode is period of time when the driver and transmission grow to understand each others' feelings and emotions. Both driver and truck can be more irritable after a bad day at the office! ;-) My last three trucks have been remarkable at figuring out what gear to shift to and when to shift. Sometimes I've had to change my behavior to get the transmission to do what I am asking. I would far,far rather do the shifting myself as I can't expect a transmission to read my mind.

Well I see for 17 nothing has changed lol. Mine, one month old, 4200 miles, and if I start off slow after coming out my driveway, there's a loud clunk upshift. Even my wife who knows nothing about cars asked "what is that"? I was too embarrassed to tell her that my brand new, 1st GM product, that's how it is. I opted to ignore the question lol.
