Please explain what this code means

Recommended Posts

We towed our boat 700 miles round trip this weekend. The SEL came on around 200miles on the way there, then went off the next day after driving around. It did the same thing on the way home. No change in performance. 32c81f85b9562c230dec3a1ff0b71377.png

The following link should help give you an indication regarding code # P0281, https://www.obd-codes.com/p0281

Looks like one other guy had the same code pop up too on an 2017 Duramax diesel after towing,

I got a CEL P0281 Cyl7 Contribution/Balance Fault code at about 700 miles. But was on a Sunday so by the time I got to a dealership it had cleared. Dealership said they had seen a few of these but was nothing they could do as it had cleared.

Then at about 2200 miles CEL came back on again same code. Stayed on till about 3500 miles. Took to local dealer at 4100 miles and they said cleared code and would not come back on so nothing they could do. Said might be bad fuel? Seems odd. I had pulled a trailer from about 1500 miles to 3800 miles and fueled up many times.

Just seeing if anyone else seen this code.

Also looks like there may be a bulletin too as this code is mentioned with many others, http://www.duramaxdiesels.com/forum/showpost.php?s=0ac663dae92aaf75667bfb7968468bd1&p=1065928&postcount=1335

This condition may be caused by an anomaly in the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

Note: It is important that both the ECM and TCM are updated to the latest software. Not updating both modules may result in additional undesired vehicle performance. If the ECM and TCM have the latest calibrations, refer to SI for the DTC set or existing condition.

Validate the ECM and TCM have the latest software calibration.

  • If the ECM and TCM are not at the latest calibration, using TIS2Web, select (K20/K71) Engine and Transmission Control Module.
    • Both modules must be reprogrammed sequentially to the latest software calibration available.
  • If the modules have the latest calibrations, refer to SI for the DTC set.
