SUVs are moving upmarket as buyers in search of family haulers grab 7 and 8-passenger crossovers. However, Chevy thinks there is an unmet need for a basic, but still very capable full-sized SUV. That is why for 2018 there is the Tahoe Custom starting at under $45K.

The Tahoe Custom is for those that need a real towing SUV and still want basic comforts, but not a "premier" trim. All Tahoe Customs can tow 6,600 pounds and those with the optional trailering package can tow up to 8,600 pounds.

Chevy says they based the Tahoe Custom on the LS trim but added 18-inch painted aluminum wheels, all-season tires and a chrome-accented grille. Plus, The third-row third-row seat has been removed, increasing cargo space behind the second row to a respectable 54 cubic feet.

“The Tahoe Custom is a response to strong customer demand for Tahoe, as well as the full-size SUV segment moving upmarket,” said Sandor Piszar, Chevrolet Trucks marketing director. “In the past five years, the average transaction price for the segment has climbed fueled by customer appetite for features like heated and cooled seats, adaptive cruise control and a head-up display. This created an unmet need in the marketplace for customers who want the cargo and towing capability of a full-size SUV to go camping, boating or off-roading but don’t necessarily want all of the option content offered on a Tahoe Premier.”

I have always loved Tahoes,, had a 96 that was my beast from 96 to January of this year..

The 45K price tag will not be real at dealerships and good luck trying to find one as base for any basic Tahoe is 60K +..

Cheers----K

Someone tell Sandor that GM no longer puts cooled seats in their truck/SUV line. You can't get adaptive cruise or Head Up Display on any K2 truck. So much for an un-meet customer appetite that would further raise ATPs.

The 2017 Yukon SLT the dealer gave me as a loaner has cooled seats.

Look again. 2016 and on are only vented.

I'll take your word for it. Whatever it's got the seat feels cooler, didn't know there was a difference. All this stuff is too fancy for my cheap self.

I drove a 1995 Tahoe a long time ago and loved it. The wife and I were recently looking for a 3 row SUV and I already had a GMC Sierra so we checked out the Yukons first. Sticker shock was an understatement. Then I thought they discounted them like the trucks, NOPE. I have no need for a $65k+ family hauler that will inevitably get milk spilled in it. We ended up going with a much more reasonably priced and feature loaded Japanese option.

Something like this Custom would have been in the running if the price is true.

One of the benefits of living in south Texas is lots of GM full sized SUVs are sold here ( cowboy Cadillacs) so finding lightly used 2-3 year olds are cheap and easy.
