Swapping cap less fuel

Recommended Posts

Anyone know if you can put the 2017 cap less fuel system on a 2016? Would be a nice feature to have if it's an easy swap

Someone on the forum wanted to swap their cap less for a capped system. You should link up

I'm sure you'll be able to, but I personally wouldn't do it. I read that people had problems with dirt getting on top of the flap so even if you try cleaning it, dirt will still find it's way in the tank. I know that's what a fuel filter is for, but I'd rather have the least amount in the tank that needs filtered. Also eventually it will lose it's seal and I have a feeling it would cost more to fix a capless system's seal than just buying a new cap on a cap system. Just have to remember that anything that's done to make things more convenient will cause problems down the line and will be more to fix. Just my opinion though so do what you want, that's just my take on it.

I agree with SSGuy85...

Unless your NASCAR guy and require quick connect/dissconnet,, seals will go bad especially if your in rust-belt / heavy winter areas with salt spray..

Additionally, many of us,, (Me) having codes displayed when cab was lose,, just imagine if they were factory seals to replace..

Cheers----K

My mom's 09 Mercury Mariner has cap-less fill and has had zero of those issues and we are in NY.

Does her's have a seal around the gas door? From what I read the K2s with the capless system isn't sealed around the gas door and if it is it's not very good and still allows dirt in. If her's isn't sealed around the gas door it's probably still a different system than on the K2 trucks. I personally would rather spend the extra second to take the cap off than deal with the problems a capless system may cause down the line. If the cap doesn't seal and throws a code, you just buy a new cap. The capless system loses seal there's no telling what it could cost to fix, well when it comes to labor if you pay someone to fix it.

Nope. No seal. There is some dirt that's accumulated but she's had no issues.

The worst part is, I don't think that these trucks have a serviceable fuel filter... just the sock on the pickup in the tank

The capless fuel actually has 2 seals you open when you put the nozzle in for gas.

And looking under my truck at the fuel neck, it looks like you can just remove that part where the seals are and just replace that part which doesn't look hard as you got plenty of room to do it under the fender. Price-wise.. sure it's a little more than a gas cap :)

And as stated on previous post, you can buy a cap to go over it if you want, or be lucky and have a friend with spare time hook you up from his CNC machine.. :D
