Exhaust Noise

Recommended Posts

Looking for an exhaust for my 6.2 that wont have the old school, deep, rumbly tone. Looking for a similar sound to the newer vettes, and other v8 cars. More of a raspy, not so deep, not super loud sound. The closest I've heard to what I want is Corsa, but of course you cant just buy the muffler.

Black Widow Venom 300, Spintech 3000, or Magnaflow. All 3 would not be to loud with headers.

Check out this guys videos he has tried a crap load of Mufflers. Its a 5.3 but will give you an idea. His videos helped me make my decision.

I like the Magnaflow 12909 for my 6.2...removed the flapper, oem muffler and resonator... It has 3 1/2 in/out so you can remove oem muffler and directly hook up. On the backside will need to add new 3 1/2 inch pipe to final location. I added twin stainless tips to the end and have enjoyed it. Good luck in finding your sound.

I loved my Corsa sport catback on mine but after doing headers and no cats it became too loud. I was thinking the touring muffler would be perfect but they do not offer one for the 6.2's. I do have it for sale in the FS page if you end up wanting to go that route!

I'm really leaning towards doing the MBRP installer series for my 15 6.2. I really like the deep tone and it's not raspy. It can be bought for around $400.. For a full stainless cast back.

If I don't go that route it will be what I did before, and what Krusty did. A Flowmaster muffler only. It sounds incredible. Although it's not super loud and I got so used to it after a few months I forgot it was there. Well except for cold starts lol.. Couldn't mistake that for a stock exhaust.

Borla ATAK? Or if that's too loud with headers, maybe the Borla S type? I have the corsa sport catback and it sounds fantastic, exactly what you're describing, however I have not heard with headers.

+1 for the Borla S Type exhaust. I had this on my Silverado and loved it. Not super loud like the ATAK but much better than stock; it sounded great IMO. This is not the GM-Borla setup; this was straight from Borla.

Write down all the aftermarket exhaust manufacturer's names and phone numbers.

Call each one, and ask them their advice on which model to buy, based on your needs.

Look online for videos that show the sound for that model exhaust on your model rig.

Look on eBay, Amazon, and Craigslist for the best price on the exhaust model you selected.

If your not installing it yourself, call all the local exhaust shops and tell them your model rig, and the model of your aftermarket exhaust. Have each place make a bid for installation, and go with the cheapest. Offering them cash may lower the bids. Telling them your price shopping may lower the bids. Pitting the 3 lowest bidders against each other will result in the lowest possible installation cost.

Since your installing all new exhaust anyway, consider having them throw some electric cutouts in there.

do you have a video of the sound? did you delete the flapper and resonator at the same time? any drone or chopper issues when going to V4? im leaning towards getting the magnaflow 12909 as i dont want it to be too loud but also wondering if it will be mcuh difference at all to warrant even changing it. i really would just like a small increase in sound at startup, idle and WOT.

No I don't have a video.. I will see what I can put together but busy job schedule for next few weeks.... Yes I did delete the flapper and resonator at the same time when adding the 12909... I know it is subjective but I was very surprised with how little drone I notice.. When I am cruising 70 mph it is almost as quiet as stock... Can definitely hear it more at Wot. If above 2000 to 2500 rpm I can hear the rumble factor starting to kick in. When it goes into v4 I can hear it very slightly when traveling 30 to 40mph...but if the radio is on at all not loud I don't even notice. If your worried about too much sound you might try removing the flapper and leaving the resonator. My goal was to get my truck sound a little more like my 2008 SD did when it was stock... Nice clean rumble but not annoying and offensive.

Before going with the 12909 I did a muffler delete leaving the resonator and flapper only... It was much louder but drone and sound were too much for me and the neighborhood. The flapper would make a weird gurgling sound and when open it was just too loud...

Something else to note is that I also have a AFE Momentum GT cold air intake that is additional noise to the formula on my 6.2.

I will say after opening up the exhaust by removing the flapper and other items like the AFE the pep and the mpg of the truck has seemed to respond for the better.
