Anybody done a windshield replacement?

Recommended Posts

My windshield took a beating in just the year I have had the Suburban. Three rock chips and two are spreading. I need to get it replaced but have a concern with the box near the rear view mirror that works with the lane keep, adaptive cruise, etc. Any problems with using a glass place such as Safelite doing the replacement or would this be something the dealer should do?

Any been there, done that?

From Phoenix son! 3 windshields a year no Joke it's a way of life....I use Safelite to repair cracks chips etc. that are small before propagating. I do not use Safelite EVER for windshields......I use local glass companies and specify PILKINGTON EZ Cool! Safelite will drop their cheap ass warped glass on it!

I have had at least 5 windshields replaced by safelite over the years since that is who my insurance recommends. I have no complaints about "cheap glass". Or at least I never noticed any difference. But those were all on older vehicles. I'm still on my original glass in this truck.

I can't comment about any extra electronic boxes by the mirror, though since my cars didn't have that.

It also depends if you are getting an insurance claim or paying out of pocket. You get to decide if you want to pay for OEM glass or get it done cheaper.

I had my 2015 Denali windshield replaced by Safelite. They were going to use 3rd party as per my insurance company (AAA). I called AAA and had to request to get an OEM glass due to HUD.

Safelite and Insurance companies are hooked up at the hip for saving money....That is why Safelite has their own glass made Chinese shit glass...And they have since bought out a old glass plant in PA to build more shit MEETS OEM SPEC glass in the plant. Only thing good about it it's American jobs

I used Safelite on my 99. Not only was it full of waves, it chipped and starred out much easier than OEM glass. But that's a hard thing to quantify. My 08 went thru 3 replacements. First chip/crack was about 30-40 miles from the dealer after I bought it new. I put PPG glass in it each time. My 2014 has made it 3 years without a major chip/crack.

Good to hear Safelite is firing up a plant in the U.S.. Maybe it's an old PPG plant. Hopefully, they'll make better glass than the Chinese stuff. It seems to me the Safelite brand name was on old early 60s side windows. I could be mistaken. There was a little hash mark rectangular border and the brand name etched in the glass.

I believe your correct it's the PPG plant! Yes, the waves are the issues no doubt and distortion of objects when looking through A pillar directions. The Float of Glass is perfect from Pilkington hands down they invented it. Nobody goes through more glass than AZ drivers
