Wind Noise from Roof-Mounted Light Bar Brackets

Recommended Posts

Ok, another update. I removed the light bar and the brackets. After taking a trip 65 miles up the highway, my mpg dropped significantly. I usually get 18-19, but with the light bar I was getting 13-15. That is a no go for me.

Maybe a bull bar or the 30" light behind the grill would be better for MPG.

I'm not surprised the mpg dropped. I was surprised that it was that much. I would have guessed 1-2 mpg. But the drag from a flat faced bar as wide as the truck has to be tremendous at highway speeds. Also, the particular location, right at the roof line to windshield is an area I believe may be particularly sensitive to aerodynamic perturbations. But I'm no aerodynamics engineer.

Sticking big objects out in the wind at highway speeds creates a lot of aerodynamic drag. More power is needed to overcome the drag. I bet we aren't far from the side mirrors being replaced with a camera system on these trucks that have relatively large mirrors. Those big tow mirrors gotta hurt the mileage significantly.
