Navigation Confusion

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this is a repeated question, but I have searched the forums without an answer. I purchased a 2017 Chevrolet 2500HD High Country last week and the dealer told me that the navigation system is provided by GM. I asked him if this was through Onstar and he said that it was a GM product and its good for the life of the vehicle. I haven't found anywhere that tells me this, and was hoping somebody here could help me?

Your in-dash nav should also be updated periodically (usually once a year). It's not free either.

I recommend using Apple Car Play or Android Auto. I use the latter. Continuously updated by Google and the best part is it doesn't cost anything extra.

The factory navigation is standard on your High Country, optional on everything else. It is free just like O_J_Simpson mentioned. If you didn't have the factory navigation, your navigation icon on your MyLink would read "OnStar Nav" or something along those lines and when selected it would inform you that you don't have any preloaded routes from OnStar unless you had already set a route through it. You can pay for OnStar Navigation if you want to spend the money but like mentioned above, you have Apple Car Play and Android Auto capabilities if you prefer those better which will update for free unlike the factory navigation just like paracutin mentioned above.

Just like others said above:

-- Your NAV system is free and will work for the life of the vehicle but if you don't update it you will only have the map that came loaded when you bought the truck.

-- If you want to upgrade the map updates come out around once a year. They run around $160 and are only available at the gmnavdisc link above. They are tied to your VIN and can only be loaded onto that specific truck.

-- The OnStar nav is different. It is an additional service that requires a paid OnStar plan. With this service you can hit the blue OnStar button, tell them where you want to go, and OnStar will automatically download it to your radio/DIC screen.

The other option is to use AA or Carplay to project goggle-maps from your phone onto the screen in the truck.

The advantage of this is the 'live traffic' feature which will advise about slow downs on your route and advise if it can find a quicker route option.

The downside of 'live-traffic' is of course, your phone will use data for the traffic updates.

If your are happy with the map coverage the truck is delivered with, you don't have to ever pay for any update if you don't want -- but like garmin and other aftermarket gps units, even when new it may not have some of the latest additions/changes to the road system.

Also don't forget that apple and android auto use data from your data plan.

The nav in the truck is more like a Garmin - and also require paid updates in order to keep them current.

Garmin usually offers lifetime maps with the purchase of their newer units.

Are we able to remove the Onstar Nav app and replace it with the basic one?

Yes you can upgrade to Navigation. Contact MVI (vendor on here), Anthony can get you hooked up. Their website is www.gm-navigation.com. I've added some of their other products. I highly recommend them.

New to the party. 2016 2500HD no nav. I downloaded Android auto to my phone. But do not know how to get goggle maps on my infotainment?

Connect your phone via USB. Push the Home button on the radio. Push the Projection icon on the screen (which should change to Android Auto when your phone is plugged in). From there you should see a map icon in lower left corner of the AA screen.

If you dont have a Projection icon on the Home screen, your unit doesn't support AA/ACP.

Consider downloading Waze as an alternative to Google Maps. I've started using it more than Maps since it added AA support.

There was a number of 2016's that did not get the hardware to run AA or carplay (2016 was the first year). GM ran out of the boxes, so sent out the trucks with the radios from the year prior that did not have it. But also, some like mine, it just needed a software update.

You really need to check with a dealer to see what you got.

The ones that did not get it, they gave something like $200 off the sticker. Kinda sad as to put in the factory one can cost $800+. As said above, there is aftermarket solutions that are way cheaper.
