Will any cat work?

Recommended Posts

After using some intake cleaner I'm now throwing a p0420 code and have tried clearing the code multiple times and have installed a new tune in the truck and the code keeps coming back. I've already ordered a new O2 sensor which should be here tomorrow in case that's the problem. If it somehow is the catalytic converter can I use any catalytic converter that's CA legal or do I need a specific one for my truck?

OEM only. If you live in a California emissions state ( Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington), you must use a California cat.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm going to pick up the O2 sensor today and hope that fixes my problem. I'd rather take a gamble and spend the $40 for it to possibly be the O2 sensor. If that's not it then I'll be buying a CAT or a whole new y pipe I haven't decided yet.

I know there are many other things that can cause a P0420 code but that fact that it came up RIGHT after using some CRC intake cleaner I have to believe the cleaner caused it. We'll see what happens after the new O2 sensor.

Found the solution to my problem. Even after the voltage readings on all O2 sensor checked out I went ahead and replaced the rear O2 sensor in bank one Monday night. Tuesday morning I cleared the code and so far have driven 130 miles of highway and city driving with no code to be seen. It used to come back after just a one way trip either to or from work so i believe i solved my problem. Anyone have an idea why it was the O2 sensor when voltages checked out?
