Some GM 3-wire crank sensors are a "pull-up" design. They generate their own voltage and send a square wave signal to the ECM.

You'd have to find the signal wire, back probe it, and see what it's doing when unplugged, and when plugged in with the engine cranking (or running, if it will). If you have no voltage on the signal wire unplugged, it's probably a pull-up design circuit.

It might be hard to see a square wave with it running without a scope. A DVOM will only read an average of the signal, which can be half the signal voltage, more or less.
