Tailgate problems

Recommended Posts

Lately my tailgate has been dropping straight down as if it didn't have the slow lowering and lift assist. Upon inspecting, I noticed the little rubber bushing in the corner is torn and crushed. Should be something covered under bumper to bumper correct? If not has anyone had to replace it and know the cost?

There are two parts that might be causing the issue. There is the bushing(#2 in diagram), which is GM 25815554 list $6.05, and there is a hinge damper (#5 in diagram) GM 23115812 list $94.28. The damper is located inside the taillight pocket, behind the hinge. The taillight needs to be removed to gain access to it.

I would say that all parts should be covered by the 3/36 warranty.

Bushing looks damaged so let's hope it's that. Either way I scheduled a visit to the dealer.

Yikes, is that a dent just to the left and up of the bushing? They might balk on the warranty and say it was abuse. You might have damaged the rod that runs the length of the tailgate, number 14 in the schematic. Good luck.

it's not dented

I just made this thread, just needed to search the keyword "tailgate"

You may not want to tell someone to order parts from the previous generation truck

correct part number is gm 84131760

You may want to get your facts straight before shooting off from your keyboard. My numbers came from a reliable GM site. Also, the previous gen did not use these parts since they didn't have a easy lower gate.

GM susperceded numbers all of the time. This is the case here.

Well don't know where you got it from, but the part GM 25815554 you listed does not exist on a 2014-2017 1/2 ton tailgate

Here's the part he needs, the bushing on our tailgates

Here's the one you told him to get, this part number is infact for a '07-'13 tailgate

I wouldn't mind so much if you weren't so confident in your advice. You were 100% sure, and this guy would have wasted money if he listened to you.

I am confident, so get over it.

As it turns out, We are both incorrect. I looked on another site, and the 25815554 is most certainly used on the 2014-up trucks, but for only those without the gate assist. I.E. W/T and cheap trucks.

Dealer is replacing the bushing and the damper sometime next week. Waiting on the parts to come in.

make sure to ask them for the part #s, so we can settle this debate once and for all. LOL

I replaced mine about 18 months into ownership. Mine broke last week again. I'll check the part # and what I paid last time, but IIRC it was like $25 for the part online. If it's more than $10 it's not getting replaced again. Not playing this $25 bushing every 18 months game. Nothing wrong my arms, i'll lower the gate.

Part # 22966936 $26.80 is what I paid on 8/13/2016.
