2017 Sierra HD PRNDL 1 question

Hi everyone, I probably have a stupid but simple question that I cant seem to find the answer to from my dealer or manual. I have a new 2017 crew cab 6.0 2500 hd the has the number 1 to the far right of the PRNDL. I understand the manual shifting aspect of the transmission but I'm looking for what the number 1 represents and its intended use on this truck. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

1 is so you can lock in 1 without cycling down using the +/- button,

 

Manual mode will show the maximum gear currently available (as opposed to the current gear)

 

The gear the transmission first selects when switched to M mode depends on which gear the transmission is currently in. There is a chart in the owners manual.

The "1" is not for locking it into first Gear. It's best used when towing (but can be used anytime) and going down a hill. Dropping it into this position will make the truck best hold the speed the truck was going when "1" was selected. It works amazingly well, I use it often when towing in the mountains and it really saves on the brakes. It will, depending on the conditions, downshift low enough that the engine will rev quite high, but that's fine.

Sure, or you can also drop it into the 1 position. It was asked why it's there, and I explained why.

Doesn't it just force the trans to maintain downhill speed sort of like it does when you depress the brakes on a downhill grade in t/h? My understanding is it will grade brake in "1" in an attempt to stop the truck?

 

I've never used it...just my understanding of what it states in the owner's manual.

Pretty much... only I don't know if I'd say it's attempting to stop the truck. It's much more effective than grade braking in tow/haul mode I find, when used on the steeper, longer grades

What truck do you have? Mine shows what gear it's currently in when I select manual
