Painting mirror caps

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me what's involved with properly painting the mirror caps on tow mirrors?

What prep needs to be done to the textured black plastic caps. I want to paint them and not have them peel or flake off after a couple of months.

I don't have any experience with painting so would I be better off taking the caps to a body shop and have them paint the caps?

How much would I expect to pay to have the four tow mirror caps painted?

My truck is Stone Blue. Not sure if colour affects the price.

You can pick up vinyl dip and do it yourself for a few bucks. It's pretty easy from what I've seen (never done it personally but have friends who used to dip all sorts of parts). Pretty much indistinguishable from paint although I don't know how easy or not it would be to match perfectly.

It won't be glossy like paint. Tons of YouTube vids on how to paint plastics.

Clean with soapy water and a scotchbrite pad. Rinse and Dry. Use some 800grit sandpaper to sand some of the texture out. Spray adhesion promoter. Spray a few coats of filler/high build primer. Wetsand with 800-1000. This is where you get most of the leveling done with the texture. Optional guide coat to make sure no high or low spots. Couple coats of base and clear. Wait a few days to cure and gas out. Wet sand and buff. Install and admire the painted caps that look awesome and you know you did it yourself.
