New owner with questions

Hi All,

Last weekend I picked up a new 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali. So far I love it. I do have a few questions about the truck...

1st - What do most people do with the OnStar stuff. I do have the trial period started, but when the free trial period is over I just can't see paying $35.00 per month to continue it. I believe the wifi hotspot requires OnStar service, but that seams to be alot to pay for extra cell coverage.

2nd - I've never had SiriusXM before & kinda like it. I've found a couple channels I like, but looking for more. I typically listen to rock , alternative, and some heavier rock like Metallica or Sevendust. Need to keep looking for channels I like. Once my free trial period is over I'll have to pay for this if I wanna keep it. How much are others paying for this service. I believe the standard price is 19.99 per month or 199 per yr. I also heard that cheaper prices could be had if you threaten to cancel service.

3rd - What are some of the hidden tips and tricks with this truck? I'm reading through a lot of old posts to see what everyone is chatting about, but any quick tips would be appreciated.

4th - When the time comes for new tires I'm thinking I'd like to level the truck along with some 275/60R20 all-terrain tires. Don't mind a little rake in the truck's stance, but 3 1/2" difference in height is a bit much. Looks like a 2 1/2" level kit should level it nicely and still leave a little rake. However I was looking at Ready Lift's website & it appears that the upper control arm might need to be replaced when I level it? Looking at RoughCountry's level kit I didn't see any mention about needing to replace the the upper control arms. So, what gives? Are new control arms really needed with a level kit?

1. You get three or five years free of basic onstar. Just call and ask for three years free or ask your dealer what the current promo is, I got three on my ‘14. It gets you some cool features with the MyChevrolet mobile app, where you can remotely lock and unlock the truck, as well as use remote start and find where you parked. It’s really cool and FREE!

SiriusXM is worthless, I use my phone to stream everything and I find that to be easier and cheaper. But it’s to each their own. Others may have more info for your other questions.

To level a Denali I wouldn’t go with the cheap spacer option but that’s your call, it won’t hurt anything. Just seems weird on a nicer model like yours. You can buy taller front shocks to replace the factory ones and that has the same effect without leveling spacers, but I got a set of Supreme Suspensions level spacers for $25 on amazon... they have been on for 20,000 miles and no issues.

I could try putting new coil overs on the front to level the truck, but that may also mean that I'd be removing the stock magnetic ride shocks. Not sure yet that will be something I want to do. This truck will see mostly daily driving and a little light offroading once in a while when fishing or hunting. A level kit with 2" or 2.5" level setup may work ok for what this truck will be used for. I have a Jeep for real off roading trips.

As far as the wifi goes. I'm outside my trial time for the onstar and just have the basic plan that they give for free for the next 5 years. I pay 20$ a month for unlimited wifi access supplied by ATT. it's nice to have it bc I have a regional cell service provider and have poor services in some of the areas thta I go. Soon I'll be changing providers. But that's all I use onstar for. That and the phone app. It's also on the Apple Watch as well. Congrats on your new truck!

When your free trial is over, and if you don't renew, they'll offer you something like 6 months for $30. Whatever you do, do not give Sirius XM a credit card (at least in my experience this has been good advice). If they have a CC number they will continue to charge you even if you call to cancel. They will transfer you to their "broken English" division for all customer service issues. I've done the specials, but always with a money order. I don't even like them having my checking account numbers. My previous experiences with Sirius XM have been very spotty.

With my current truck, I just let my subscription die, and I stream with Pandora and Android Auto.

I never renewed my OnStar, once in a blue moon we will activate the wifi for like a few gig usage if we are traveling otherwise we leave it alone as it is pricey. I did keep xm though, I don't stream music off my phone though. As far as leveling, I do believe you will get error warnings on your dash if you remove those magnetic shocks...

The wifi is only $20 now for unlimited.
