How to remove 5.7 Vortec from 97 GMC 1500

So I learned the hard way about buying trucks on Craigslist and picked up this 1997 GMC Sierra 1500 last week was told all she needed was a water pump, this was obvious with the water pouring out of the weep hole every time you put it into the radiator but none the less bought it because it snows like crazy here in the mountains and I barely made it around last winter in my Honda so I needed a 4x4. Replaced the water pump then found a leak in the radiator at the oil cooler line had a radiator lined up so I went to start her up on day 6 of having her and my engine sounded like a damn door knocker! Knocking hard on the passenger side of the engine. She's got 230k so I just accept the inevitable and it's time to replace this engine. Got a engine lined up only 160k on it from a reliable source with regard to it's quality my problem is I have never done this job before. I've done my research so far and I think I have an idea of what to do but I'm aware there is more than one way to skin a cat and I'm sure some of you have skinned quite a few so I'd like to get a run down from the pros. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I will be doing this swap in 2 weeks also any tips on tools I should have ready for this job like socket sizes extensions power tools ect. And what gaskets will I need to have on hand to replace thank you in advance for all contributions. I'll be happy to document my experience for future readers and knowledge seekers who find themselves in my position as this job unfolds

In terms of gaskets I would change a few while you have a new engine on the stand or on a lift. I would do the oil pan and rear main seal. If you end up having to do this while its in the truck you'll wish you did it before. You might also consider doing the intake manifold gasket as well but that can be done in the truck with less difficulty. Obviously a good set of sockets and crescent wrenches will be necessary. Take as many pictures as you can as you take things apart to help you remember where lines and wires are routed. Labeling things can help also. Basically a really good sense of organization will help the project run smoothly. You will also have to decide if the transmission is also coming out with the engine.
