DotNetReloaded
I found a big leak on the bottom of the steering gear box. I have a 2001 8.1 3500 silverado. Has anyone had such an issue and did you have to replace the whole unit or is there a seal that can be replaced. You guys have a part number for these 2. Thanks. Mattt
Just noticed my '01 is doing the same. Last weekend I was under there doing an oil change, & the whole frame area underneath is soaked. Some of it looks like PS fluid, other areas of it look like grease. Grease in the box?? Im all ears......Thanks.
DotNetReloaded
I called the dealer and he would not give me a part number. He said they have a seal kit with the washer to replace the seal in the gearbox near the pitman arm.

Mattt
I cross posted this on "Ask the GM Expert", and it sounds like its not a job for a garage mechanic. Since you have done it in the past, can you offer any pointers? I was at the Auto Swapmeet yesterday in Long Beach, CA and I spoke with a few PS box rebuilders out there. One mentioned that the bearing above the seal has probably gone bad and is allowing the pitman shaft to move back and forth which in turn took the seal out. So, I dont know that replacing just the seal is the answer if he is right. Two different PS box rebuilders out there quoted me between $90 & $150 for a rebuilt box. That almost seems like a better deal, but then there is the mess of changing the box out and bleeding the lines.
