Disable Auto door locks???

I have a '06 LT 1500 and the automatic door locks are driving me crazy. Is there any way to disable this feature?

I've been through the DIC but only see the options "lock in gear" or "lock at speed".

It can be done but I believe only a dealer can do it. I have a '99 and it was the only year that can't be reprogrammed.

in the newer trucks, there is no way to disable this because of safety reasons, mainly pertaining to car jacking. Me personally, let me deal with that, if someone tries to car jack me, they are gonna find themselves at the business end of my Taurus PT140 .40 cal.

With that being said, I may have found the fix and I will keep you guys updated because while its not a super big deal to me, it drives some people crazy.

I work for the US Department of State and we do a lot of work on vehicles, mainly turning them into cop cars, i.e. installing radios, lights and siren packages. We have done a lot of suburbans and tahoes and I have found out something neat. On the police package and only the police package vehicles, there is a linkage in the doors that will unlock the doors when you pull on the handle. It will still be locked from the outside, but now you can just pull on the inside handle and it will cause the door to unlock. Basically a mechanical overide to an electrical disability on GMs part.

I am waiting on a response from one of my contacts that makes the orders for the vehicles and he said he can get the part number for this linkage and then you can order it directly from GM.

Like I said, i will keep you updated. just wanted to let you know theres hope for this problem.

This just came out last week. Note that this only applies to the 2006 and 2007 model years.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment that they are unable to over ride the automatic door locking feature. In prior model years, customers were able to select "Doors Lock Manually" from the DIC. However, starting in the 2005 model year, this selection was removed due to potential safety concerns.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Since the 2005 model year, all BCMs (Body Control Modules) are programmed from the factory to allow two personalized door lock settings:

Mode 1: All doors lock when the transmission is shifted into gear.

Mode 2: All doors lock when the vehicle speed is greater than 8 mph (13 km/h).

New BCM calibrations have been released for the 2006 and 2007 model years to allow a Mode 3: No Automatic door locking (Manual). This mode should ONLY be turned on at the owner's request. At this time no new calibration is available for the 2005 models.

To turn on this feature for a 2006 or 2007 model, reprogram the BCM with updated calibrations currently available in TIS2000. When at the "Calibration Selection" screen in TIS2000 select the "locking" tab across the top and pick the calibration listed "auto door lock option enabled on DIC". If this calibration is not selectable in TIS2000 contact Techline at 800-828-6860 for a VIC number to complete programming.

On vehicles with a DIC (RPO UK3) when using the steering wheel controls to scroll through the locking options a new "Manual" selection will be available to choose, along with the two previous selections "In Gear" and "With Speed".

On vehicles Without a DIC use the owners manual to enter the door lock programming mode in section 2. Once in the programming mode press the lock side of the drivers power door lock switch, you will hear either one, two or NO chimes. One chime indicates you are in Mode 1 (lock in gear), Two chimes you are in Mode 2 (lock with speed) and NO chimes you are in Mode 3 (Manual). Continue to press the door lock switch to scroll through the 3 different selections until you hear the desired mode and then exit the programming mode by turning the ignition key on.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

While I commend GM's efforts to finally come to terms with this, the wording of this document confirms that their big brother operation is alive and well.

Just how can a concern be potential anyway? If you went in to the dealership and told the service manager you had a potential concern, would that mean you were concerned in a different way than it you just went in and told them you had a concern?

This is what is known as doublespeak (Thank you, George Orwell.). Adjectives or other modifiers are added for the benefit of the legal staff to obscure the meaning of a phrase, while preserving some nuance of communication based on the reader's natural inclination to try to assume what isn't actually said. Doublespeak often results in gibberish, as seen here. Potential concerns, indeed!

That aside, I can just imagine all the pouting socialists out there who now will have to concede that they've lost a battle in their quest to control other people's lives, through their door locks.

NOTE to all 2005 model year owners: Go to your dealer and tell them to make this change to *your* vehicle. Bring this TSB with you. If by then they haven't extended it to the 2005 MY, get on the record that you're waiting for this to apply to your vehicle. And do it before your 36k mile warranty runs out!!!! That way if it takes a while before they offer it for 2005 trucks, and your warranty runs out in the meanwhile, you'll have a kind of "rain check" so you might still be able to get it done under warranty despite your miles having gone over 36k in the meanwhile.

Actually that isnt correct. I had a 99 that I wanted disabled period. I took it to the dealer and they turned it off. Check with your dealer. If they say it cant be done, I would look for another dealer. Then again....I think 99 was a split year between the old and new body style. I had the new body style. I wonder if that maybe made a difference.

1999 was a totally different animal. Tthe inability to disable the automatic locking didh't appear until the 2005 model year.

Now the only people left out in the cold are the 2005 owners, like me. Everybody else--pre-2005, and post 2005--can disable their big brother door locks. Waah.
