Difference Between 4l60e And 4l80e And How To Tell Which Is Which?

So i have a '97 Z71 extended cab...how do i tell which transmision it has and what is the difference between the 2?

If you have a 1500 which I'm guessing from your profile you have the 4l60e.

The 4l80 was only available in 3/4 and up.

Where both transmissions good and was there ever any issues with them?

You can tell by looking up the RPO codes in your glove box.

 

I've heard the 4L80E is a better transmission, as the 4L60E was plagued with some "bell houseing" cracks or something like that. I'm not for certain. But then it might just be a case of the 80 is a more heavy duty trans, and if you put an HD trans on a LD truck its not going to stress it much, and it should last longer.
