Power Steering Fluid

Recommended Posts

I need a little power steering fluid in my 2005 GMC Sierra. Is it ok to use transmission fluid I remember years ago you could. I looked in the manual and it reads GM power steering fluid. Is it the same? The reason I ask is I only need a little and I all ready have a bottle of transmission fluid. Thanks in advance, Jake.

Use power steering fluid. Not ATF. If you have a couple of thousand miles on the vehicle then spring for a full bottle of power steering fluid and do a swap out of fluid. Most do not ever bother but it never hurts to refresh fluid.

Since when could you use ATF for the power steering?

Back in the 60s and 70s I do not think you could even buy power steering fluid. Everthing on the road used ATF as far as I know. This changed sometime in the 80s and the OEs began recommending PS Fluid.

I don't want to give myself away but I go back to the 60s. Trouble is I don't think I ever had a car with power steering then. I want to think I remember power steering fluid in the 70s but some times my recall don't work as good as it used to.

Have a great one,

Don
