Antenna Delete Mod

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all,

Just finished the antenna delete mod on Rosie. I think it looks much better, but I may be a little partial. For anyone who is interested in doing it, I snapped a few pics, post mod. I ran a wire from the base to the bottom of the antenna, secured it with a bolt and nut I had lying around. Then zip-tied the antenna just inside the fender. The cowl piece has three clips and popped off easly, the new just snapped into place. P/N 15287179 for the cowl. Hopefully the pics show enough! :D

This mod has been posted before although a bit differently with the antenna. Instead of placing the antenna under the hood they ran a length of wire inside the door channel up along the top of the truck. I tried the mod and after my first trip into rural PA I removed it and placed the antenna back on the truck because the reception was not as good.

Yeah, I went with the wire through the door channel mod. I checked a few stations once a few months ago when I first did it, they sounded normal. But I haven't used AM/FM since then. :dunno: We did the same thing on my friends 07 silvy classic, which he uses FM all the time, and he hasn't noticed any change. But this is also in the city.

Pretty nifty job. I suspect with the antenna being covered up by the metal your AM/FM reception will definitely suffer if you used it. I wish I could find an FM amplifier for the stock antenna. I listen to a couple stations that I can't get reception on once I get off on the country roads going home. Not sure if they make such a beast. I gave up on XM a couple years ago after they raised their rates. I was listening to local stations anyway to hear the local news, but have recently found a few stations that are way far away and offer some variety that I can only get on the interstate.

I have tried all of the radio stations in my area...none are any worse than before. I think where the antenna is still connected to the base, it still picks up like normal. I never listened to any of the "borderline" stations before because of static, so I am indifferent on that subject. I mostly listen to CD's anyway, so as long as my classic rock station still came in I am happy. (It does :dunno: ) I got tired of it whipping my truck when going under a tree, so this was another plus for me.

I don't have a problem with trees...etc I plan on removing my antena completely cause i hate clear channel and fm radio :) I'll fork over my 12.95 a month to XM.

I'll second the NBS truck thought. Does anyone know of the cowl piece needed for the GMT-900 trucks that does not have the antenna hole?

I went to the dealer and "borrowed" (the parts guy loaned me one for a test fit) the piece from the NBS Tahoe. The shape of the hood and the cowl piece are different from the trucks and will not work. I've considered filling the hole and sanding it to make a smooth surface but I don't think I can match the grain and the color of the opposite side. There are several antenna manufacturers that offer shorty antennas but at this point I'm still waiting for a cleaner solution. Does anyone know if you can get a radio delete option (say for a work truck) that would have a smooth cowl piece?
