Tranny Is Junk

Recommended Posts

I was driving around town today and the tranny shifted hard to 2 once then about 20 minutes later once in town. Once the light turned green off I went it shifted normal from 1st and hit 2nd hard then I noticed the tach was at 5000 and I was only going 25. So I turned off the radio and AC and noticed the truck was not shifting into 3rd at all so I turned around and headed to my work that was about 10 minutes away. Luckily I made to work and got it towed to the neariest Chevy dealer. Has anyone else had any problems like this? The truck has 20,000 miles on it. And yes it had tranny fluid in it..

Man I am glad for ON-STAR. I bought the truck used and the ON-STAR expired on the 5th of May. I bought the ON-STAR for like 20.00 and it has already payed for it-self. If I would have called the tow truck it would have been 48 to hook-up and $2.00 every mile and the nearest dealership from my location was 15 miles away...

This bulletin is being revised to add the Tahoe and Yukon Hybrid models. Also, additional steps (11-13) have been added to the Correction. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 08-07-30-021 (Section 08 -- Body & Accessories).

Condition

Some customers may comment of any of the following conditions:

• The transmission may not shift.

• The door locks may cycle by themselves.

• The engine may not crank intermittently.

• The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) gauges may fluctuate.

Technicians may find the following High Speed GMLAN Communications Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) shown as a current code or stored in history:

• U0073: Control Module Communications Bus OFF

• U0100: Lost Communication With ECM/PCM

• U0102: Lost Communication With Transfer Case Control Module

• U0121: Lost Communication With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module

• U0140: Lost Communication With Body Control Module

Cause

These conditions may be caused by a terminal for the High Speed GMLAN Serial Data Bus that has backed out of the 16-way electrical connector to the automatic transmission.

Correction

Do This

Don't Do This

Repair or replace backed out transmission connector terminals as necessary. Ensure that the TPA is fully seated (TPA centered in check window) prior to reinstalling the connector.

Do NOT replace BCM, ECM, EBCM, TCM, TCCM or wiring harness before checking terminals in transmission connector.

Technicians are to inspect and repair the 16-way electrical connector at the transmission using the following procedure:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to the Battery Cable Disconnection and Connection procedure in SI.
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to the Lifting and Jacking procedure in SI.
    2043300.gif

  3. Locate the 16-way electrical connector on the right side of the automatic transmission. Refer to the illustration above, which shows the location of the 16-way connector.
  4. Inspect the connector for any backed out terminals. If a backed out terminal is found, identify the terminal that has backed out on the repair order. Look at the connector in order to identify the number of the cavity with the backed out terminal. Look up the connector end view in SI to determine the corresponding circuit number and to verify the cavity number with the backed out terminal.
    2088951.gif

  5. The illustration above shows what to look for - a backed out female terminal.
  6. Remove the transmission connector and repair or replace the terminal(s) as necessary. If the female terminal must be replaced, it is part number 22124472200. It is located in Yazaki tray number 12 in the J-38125 Terminal Repair Kit. Refer to the repair procedures in the Wiring Systems And Power Management section of SI for more information.
  7. Inspect the terminals in the transmission itself (male half of the connection). Are any of the male terminals bent? If so, refer to the connector end view document in SI to identify the bent terminal. Repair the terminals as necessary.
  8. Prior to reinstalling the transmission connector, perform the following steps to ensure that the Terminal Position Assurance (TPA) lock is fully seated.
    2089334.gif

8.1. Locate the TPA lock in the reassembled transmission connector. Refer to the arrow in the illustration above, which points to a TPA lock. This one is in an unseated position. Seat the TPA using a small screwdriver in the slot. Use the following SI document path to access the Kostal Connector (transmission harness connector) repair information in SI.

    - Build the vehicle

    - Select Service Manual

    - Select Power and Signal Distribution

    - Select Wiring Systems and Power Management

    - Select Diagnostic Information and Procedures

    - Select Kostal Connectors (Transmission)

    2089456.gif

8.2. Check to see if the TPA is fully seated. If the TPA is centered in the check window, then the TPA is fully seated. If the TPA is off-center in the check window, as shown in the illustration above, then the TPA is only partially seated. Note the large gap at the arrow. If the TPA is only partially seated, it will be necessary to reseat the TPA lock and recheck to ensure that it is fully seated.

    2089400.gif

8.3. The TPA lock should be centered in the window. Refer to the illustration above, which shows the TPA lock centered in the check window. The gaps shown by the arrows are even on both sides.

  9. Install the transmission connector. Note on the repair order which terminal number or numbers were repaired or replaced and if a male terminal was bent. Indicate the number of the terminal that was bent.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Check for chaffed or shorted wiring by the park brake bracket assembly to the left IP junction block.
  12. Inspect underneath the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) for pinched or chaffed wires on the UBEC support bracket.
    2077437.gif

  13. Check connector X1 (1) on the back of the left IP fuseblock for a loose connection. Reports from the filed have found the connector not fully seated and causing intermittent concerns.
  14. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to the Battery Cable Disconnection and Connection procedure in SI.
  15. Clear the DTCs and verify proper operation of the vehicle.
  16. If no terminal or connector concerns are found, refer to the Diagnostic System Check procedure in SI to begin your diagnosis of these customer concerns.

Parts Information

If the female terminal must be replaced, the terminal part number is 22124472200. It is located in Yazaki tray number 12 in the J-38125 Terminal Repair Kit.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment on a harsh shift, illuminated MIL and a DTC P0717 may be found as a history code in the TCM.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Follow current SI diagnostics, if diagnosis of this condition leads to removal of the pump and ISS it is important to visually inspect the condition of the ISS wires. These wires can be damaged in the area where they are exposed and not encased in conduit as shown in the figure below. WPC returns have shown that when wire damage has occurred it is usually the white wire that is damaged. If wire damage is found replace the ISS and inspect the pump cover in same area for any possible sharp points that may cause damage to the wire. Any sharp points on the pump casting in this area should be removed with a file.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment on a flare or harsh 2-3 shift.

Recommendation/Instructions:

This condition may be caused by leaking 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch fluid seal rings (230). The following conditions are indications that the fluid seal rings may be leaking:

Delayed/extended or delayed with harsh feel initial Park to Drive and/or Reverse to Drive shifts, that are more likely to occur when the transmission temperature is below approximately 40 degree C (104 degree F).

Harsh or flaring 2-3 shifts that are more likely to occur when the transmission fluid temperature is in the approximately 0 degree C (32 degree F) to 40 degree C (104 degree F) temperature range, but can be present at any temperature.

Harsh 2-3 shifts that are more likely to occur at less than 50% tp.

Vehicles built in the January through August, 2007 time frame are more likely to have leaking fluid seal rings.

Important: When inspecting the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch fluid seal rings (230) there probably will not be visible signs that the seal rings are damaged.

If any of the conditions above describe the flare/harsh 2-3 shift condition replace the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch fluid seal rings (230), DO NOT replace the valve body or TCM.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

This PI was superseded to update model years. Please discard PIP3170F.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

The 4L60E/4L65E/4L70E may exhibit a condition of a harsh 1-2 upshift. There are usually two different types of harsh 1-2 shift.

Note: Starting in 2006 and future, some calibrations have been revised to give the 1-2 shift adapts much greater capability. These adapts can greatly improve 1-2 upshift feel but need upshifts to work. Make sure the vehicle has at least 100 miles of varied driving conditions before attempting to evaluate the 1-2 upshifts.

Recommendation/Instructions:

  1. The harsh shift occurs at light throttle only, is random and may be worse if the accelerator is released just before or as the 1-2 shift occurs. This is a characteristic of the transmission shift that cannot be changed.
  2. The harsh shift is consistent and always occurs under the same driving conditions. The following items have been found to most frequently cause this concern:

Check for the presence of DTCs. Some DTCs cause maximum line pressure resulting in harsh shifts.

1-2 accumulator valve (371) sticking in the bore due to chips, debris or bore finish.

4-3 sequence valve (383) sticking in the bore due to chips, debris or bore finish.

1-2 accumulator piston (56) cracked or damaged or seal (55) cut.

Important: The 1-2 accumulator piston / spring assembly is transmission model specific and may make use of only an inner spring or may use both an inner and an outer spring. The most accurate and up to date source of information on how the accumulator assembly is built is available from the GMSPO parts catalog.

It is important to also refer to SI for other possible causes of a harsh 1-2 shift, Document ID # 10224.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

CD..........You would never have to pay for any towing or roadside

service for your GM vehicle while it is under the GM new car

warranty period no matter if you have Onstar or not !!!!

All it takes for service is to either use Onstar or call the GM

customer service 800 number from any phone and they will

send out a tow or service vehicle free of charge no matter

where your at.....................

Read your service manual for what is included.

Watch them come back and say "Come pick it up, unable to duplicate problem" :D

Make sure that they PHYSICALLY inspect the damn thing, and not hook it up to some computer...computer dont tell shit when the fluid is a pint low, if necessary, make them drop the pan and look for shavings (Not a good find)

I am usually the last one to admit or mention problems with GM trucks (since I am an owner), but my friend got a 08 Silverado about 2 months ago. Two weeks after he picked it up the trans was acting funny. He would try to accelerate and it would just rev. He would have to stop the truck, turn off/on (seemed to be resetting something) and it would be fine for a few more miles. To make a long story short; GM replaced the trans with ~800 miles with no questions asked. They didnt even want the techs to dig into the trans, just replace and return.

I mess with him and say that he should have chose "Professional :fume: Grade" :D
