Anyone Got Gmc Dealer To Do Warranty On Chevy?

I've got an '06 Tahoe that I need to have checked and the closest Chevy dealer is 120 miles away, but there's a GMC dealer 1 mile away. I know, I've read comments before that say they're different companies and that's like having a Ford dealer do warranty on a Dodge. I disagree.

Disagree all you want. It doesn't really change anything.

I have a friend that owns a Chevy store. They could DO the warranty work on my GMC but GM will not pay them for it. According to his dealer agreement, he is only allowed to perform warranty work on Chevrolet motor vehicles if he wants to bill GM. It may sound silly but I didn't make the rules.

I'm sure others will offer different opinions, but I'd have to see the actual dealer agreement before I believe it.

It isn't as different as a Ford dealer do warranty work on a Dodge, that is just kooky talk. (NOTE: last I heard GM and Chrysler were talking merger so you might be taking your chevy to a Chrysler garage pretty soon :D )

Long ago we were only to do interdivisional warranty work on emergency basis. Then a few years ago there was a push that we could all work on anything with a GM badge, that is when they started putting that little silver GM badge on the door of everything. Now they are back to wanting divisional work being done on an emergency basis. Exceptions can be made case by case for things like mileage, I believe, but I don't have an updated Policy and Procedure manual handy. Chevy and GMC trucks are pretty much the same beast so I wouldn't see a problem with it. The problems arose when a Chevy dealer was working on a Caddy or a Saturn. It's not that we didn't have the same access to information or training or skill. It was more about warranty costs going up based on the fact that we didn't have much experience with the subtle differences across brands. More of a problem I think was specialty tools. Not every dealer has the same specialty tools sent out. A Chevy dealer has little access to Hummer J tools. Some times you need them and not having them makes repairs take longer and cost more money.

You don't really have any of these problems going cross divisonal between Chevy and GMC trucks. Before worrying about it too much I would just drop it by the GMC dealer and see what happens. If the nearest Chevy dealer is 120 miles away I'm sure you are not the only customer that this has been a problem for.

I'd say it's worth a shot, and if it's 120 miles to the nearest Chevy dealer, it'd really surprise me if they turned you away. Worst comes to worst, they tell you to go away, and you drove 2 miles. :D

I went through this once before. I had a '97 Tahoe under warranty and the battery kicked the bucket. I told the warranty people that's what it was and asked if I could just have the local GMC dealer swap it out. They declined, sent a tow truck to tow my Tahoe 120 miles, that dealer put in a new battery & said 'come get it'. That was a major pain in the butt and I swore I'd never buy another Chevy. I guess I didn't learn. I was hoping they had changed the way they did things by now.

I have seen folks post saying that they will do good will emergency repairs on a case by case basis. Otherwise, NO.

I don't understand why people think they should? They ARE different brands. No different than buying something at Home Depot and asking Lowe's to service it becasue they both sell the same product.

It is a little bit of a different story if there is a Chevy and GMC store in close proximity to eachother. In any metro area there are bound to be one of each withinn reasonable distance and they will not pay except in emergency situations there. In BFE Utah where there might not be a rest stop withinn 50 miles of a store the rules are a little different.

They are different divisions of the same company not different companies. GM holds the bottom line on the costs. It makes for confusing accounting if they are doing it all the time but a few cases here and there can be delt with.

I can see where it would create a mess. Some GM vehicles are basically the same, but some are totally different vehicles. Training, parts, and special tools needed for some would make it not practical even if it was allowed.

I blieve if you are out of your original warranty and have a GMPP extended warranty that any GM dealer can file a claim with the gmpp warranty, but if you are still under the original warranty, then your up a creek getting a GMC dealer to warranty a chevy. I use to work for GM dealer, we had chevy and if we took a GMC on trade and it was in need of warranty we had to run it down the street to the GMC dealer to get it done. Its just the way it is.

How did you know I live in BFE Utah? Seriously, I do.

Lucky guess based on my travels and not seeing any sign of a GM dealer withinn 100 miles of one another. The choices are pretty far and few between but that would be one of five or six states I could think of. I usuall go Utah when thinking BFe after my holding IT for what seemed like an eternity in the flats on 80. When I finally found a road it lead no where but out of sight so I got out of my car and took a leak only to be escorted back to the highway by a Humvee. That little trip makes Utah stick out.

Perhaps where I live, it's not an issue.

When I had my GMC YukonXL, I always brought it to the Chevy dealership for service (and yes, warrenty work) and never once had an issue. And the GM dealership was right behind them. I just perferred the service from the Chevy dealership.
