Stock Fluids

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 2002 Chevy 2500HD 4x4 Duramax Diesel. The owner did not have a manual for the vehicle but I will get one soon. I was going to change the front and rear diff. and was wondering does the vehicle have a gasket when it comes stock and does anyone know the stock fluid in it. I called Global transmisson inreference to the Allsion transmission and they told me to stay with Dextron 2 or 3 verses 6. Does anyone know what comes stock in the tranfer case and is it a tale that if you use synthetic fluids and do not have a gasket it would leak faster than if you had one.

You can use synthetics in every gearbox in this vehicle and not worry about leaks. The Allison came with DexIII in your 2002 and DexVI is backward compatible so you can use it without worry. As well you can use Amsoil's Torque Drive and Allison's Transynd , both of which are better than the DexIII or DexVI (even the synthetic versions) in your Allison Transmission.

Can't remember what's in the TC.

Here is a list of what your HD takes. As long as your Tcase isn't a NVG 236/246 then you can use ATF or the Torque-Drive fluid.

  • 4 weeks later...

From another site, the claimed information from Allison is that the older transmissions have seals that may leak if Dex VI is used. I think the cut-off year was 2006, and someone posted these serial numbers (that is, after these are the Dex VI compatible Allison 1000 transmissions).

S/N 6310670488 and up for Indianapolis built transmissions, AND...

S/N 6320784373 and up for Baltimore built transmissions used in GM pickups.

(Note: the 3rd digit indicates the build location; the sequence number starts after that.)

All of these Allisons do very well on synthetics, with Allison's Transynd or other TES-295 considered by many (including Allison) to be the best for any of them. For the older Allisons, a Dex III Synthetic ATF is excellant, too (like Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF Mercon, which now says for "older GM transmissions" in small print on the back because Dex III is no longer licensed).

Dex III is also called for in the T-case and synthetic is again a better choice. Some (of us) have switched to Mobil 1 Synthetic 5-30 motor oil, claiming that it quiets it down. The motor oil replacement idea came after it was found that the non-synthetic ATF could vaporize over time. This is a personal decision since it isn't recommended by GM.

For the front differential, if you switch to a synthetic GL-5 75-90 gear oil, you should replace the vent with a white cover. Google search "GM with a vent cap in the front diff that may not be compatible with synthetic fluid" (with the quotes) and you'll see more about it.

For the front and rear differential, you can use the genuine GM "grapejuice" which is very expensive and might imply it has a secret ingredient (but probably doesn't). Most have been very happy with Mobil 1 75-90 Synthetic Gear Oil.
