It's a Light Duty 3/4 ton, HD 3/4 tons have a GVW of 9200lbs and yours has 8600lbs. As far as the Vin code says the 6th digit has to be a 2 for it to be a 3/4 ton and to be a HD it has the have the higher GVW.

It's a "3/4-TON" truck.

The "HD" badge is pretty loosely used by GM marketing to mean different things.

In your model year, it distinguishes between the 8600GVWR and 9200GVWR units.

In some model years an 8600GVWR 3/4-ton crew cab like yours was badged as a 1500HD because marketing needed a model to compete with the Ford F150 crew cab.

In the case of my truck, I have no clue what the "HD" signifies (and I don't care).

My truck does not say HD anywhere, or on any paperwork, VIN readout, etc., but when I plug a diagnostic code reader into the truck, it asks if the truck is heavy duty. Only answering yes will get the code reader to work.

So I guess there is marketing HD (label on side) and vehicle HD and the two might not be the same? (Actually to me Heavy Duty is something like a big Mack truck...)

Also my truck seems to be the only one around my area that does not say 4 x 4 on the back sides. But I know it has 4WD because there is a lever for this in the center of the floor! :D

Well, since the 4500's (Kodiak and TopKick) are marketed at "Medium Duty" trucks, it's pretty hard to think of my little Silverado as "Heavy Duty"!

Badges and stickers for the marketing people to impress the uninformed!

I thought only the HD's with the 6.0L's came with the 4:10 rear end.

Just look at the front grille and if you see a +/- 2" black plastic "gap filler" piece between the headlights and the bumper, then it is an HD.

It is a 6.0L, and it does have 4.10 gears. It's GVWR is 8600#, so GM did not put an "HD" badge on it.

8600 GVW is the regular 2500 or the 1500HD NOT a 2500HD

6.0 and 411 come in many trucks not just the HD.

It's all marketing word-games.

If the 4500-series with GVWR of 17,500# is called a Medium Duty truck, why are we calling our wimply little 2500/3500 pickups Heavy Duty? Just a marketing way of making us feel like we're big boys now. :):D:lol:

i think the difference between the 2500 and the 2500HD is a full floating rear axle so the HD can carry more weight. Almost a 1 ton but not quite

Hmmm, weird.

My 2000 2500 is HD (per the description) according to VIS and has a bed capacity of 2164 lbs (per the glove compartment) but it is rated 8600 lbs. I don't have the full floating diff but I do have the 6.0L and 4.10.

Has Z85 Heavy duty suspension too (among other things).

The gmt-800 9200lb gvw HD trucks didn't start untill 2001.

The gmt-800s that were the 8600 gvw were marketed as

the LD aka light duty 01 thru 04.

No dome on the hood and you could get the auto-trac and

3:73s too.

They (the LD) came in all cab models till 04 and then only as

a crew. (2500 models only refered too).

My 01 2500 LD had the 6.0 l480 auto-trac 3:73s and 8 bolt wheels.

Is the 9200lbs from the rear axle or just an extra leaf in the rear?

I went thru the same thing on my truck, it has heavy duty everything, coolers, suspension, transmission but its still considers an light duty 2500, When i bought it I thought all 2500's were the same but much too my dismay I found out later it was a light duty. I just dont understand why automakers make buying a truck so damn confusing!
