  1. For Hyundai, their maintenance is no more than what you would expect... oil changes, engine air filter etc. I did all those myself and kept records. Hyundai cannot by law refuse a warranty claim as long as you do the required maintaiance, through their dealers or not. The most expensive piece of required maintenance is a timing belt replacement required on the Santa Fe at 60K miles. For that I did use a dealer. Other than that, all their maintenance can be done elsewhere. Now that my 24 months of free oil changes are done, my 1500 is not seeing the dealer for an oil change. It gets Penzzoil Syn and a Mobil 1 oil filter. And it is much happier with that than the standard dealer issued dyno oil.
  2. Yep, I realize that. Thing is, my 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe which I still own has a phenomenal paint job as well. When I detail that car in the summer, you could mistake it for just coming out the showroom. I do not know if they made it in Korea in 2009 and were able to do an oil based paint job there not subject to the EPA, but I have zero complaints with the paint. The one thing I do not like about the Santa Fe is the road noise. Other than that, I love that car. As much as I want to buy American, I cannot stand for paying more for inferior quality. If Hyundai built and sold a light truck in the US, I'd trade in my High Country immediately.
  3. I can only share what I have experienced. My 2014 High Country has been a terrible disappointment. I want to love this truck. Heck, I spent twice on it than I spent on each Santa Fe. Why would I not take care of it? It is a city truck - sees mall duty, not work duty. It gets a full detail twice a year and is always clean. When I detail it, I use Klasse AIO and sealant to protect the paint. With all that, the paint job is disgraceful. I seriously do not understand why it has as many chips as it does. It only sees city driving. The rust issue is simply inexcusable. And for a GM dealer to shrug off that issue on a one year odl truck with "All Trucks Rust", is simply irresponsible. We should not have to fight to get minimum acceptable quality from GM. But sadly, we do. If you have had your seatbelt recall fix done, are you happy with it? Are you happy with the hack job they call an acceptable solution? In contrast, both Hyundai's were purchased and driven in Illinois, and babied less than this High Country. The 2001 was sold without any rust. The 2009 does not have rust at all. How do I know? I change the oil and do the maintainance myself, so I know what the underbody looks like. The warranty should tell you something - for Hyundai to stand behind their product 100% for 5 years and the powertrain for 10, they have to build quality in. The sad part is GM can fix these issues so easily. The technology to do a good paint job is well within their reach, as is the technology to treat their frames for rust. I have to only wonder whether GM deliberately designs their products for premature failure after their short warranties run out. Why else would they skimp on things that keep a generally well engineered product from being great?
  4. I am relaying my experience and a reference comparison with another make and manufacturer that supposedly is a cheap import with a bad reputation for quality. Without a doubt, my experience with Hyundai is the quality and after sales service is far superior to what I have experienced with GM. A 2 year old GM truck should not be rusting as my top of the model line High Country is. It should not be chipping paint like it is. It should not be subjected to a hack job on a seatbelt recall. These are real issues with this truck. You can see a number of others on this forum itself with the same issues. And GM chooses not to do anything about these issues. It is unfortunate your mom is having a bad experience with her Hyundai. I have another 2009 Santa Fe as well, which is also trouble free. In addition, I find the dealership experience with Hyundai to be superior to the dealership experience with GM.
  5. My 2014 High Country has been OK, but deeply disappointing given the price. Prior to this, I owned a 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe. I only traded that in because the A/C finally died at 13 years old. That little SUV in perfect mechanical and cosmetic condition. With a detail which I would do every year, it looked like it just came out the showroom. Never had a major mechanical issue, and I traded it in at 130K miles. It had zero rust on it after 13 harsh Illinois winters. My 2014 High Country on the other hand: - has had a series of recalls on it, all to do with potential safety issues. - has more paint chips on it in 2 years than my Hyundai had in 13 - is rusting pretty badly on the chassis. There was a TSB on it that I had to argue with the dealer to perform last year. The first GMC dealer nearest my house refused to do it saying I needed to take it back to a Chevy dealer. I had to drive out to the selling dealer who argued that "all trucks rust". I printed out the TSB and showed it to him, then he grudgingly had it done. One year later and the rust is back. The bottom of this truck is lterally wasting away. - Recent seatbelt recall fix has GM requiring dealers to "cut into the interior trim of the truck with an exacto knife" leaving a gaping hole in the trim. So much for professional quality work on a $60K truck. No appeals to the dealer or to GM social team or executive team to do a better job did any good. GM has done a lot of things right with this truck, but overall, the company fails to do the small things right. And it does not care about its customers. It does not take much to do a proper rustproofing job, or a proper paint job, or a proper fix for a seatbelt issue... they just do not care.
  6. Thank you for this. Just installed the unit I got for Christmas on my 2014 High Country. Your methods was a LOT easier than messing with the sill plate. I went into the cab from the grommet under the driver side foot area as shown in the youtube video. I had no idea what a BCM looked like or know where to find it. So for those like me, it is a small black box with 6 rectangular wire harnesses plugged into it right above the brake pedal area under the instrument cluster. The pink connector is plugged into the second position from the drivers side door. Since it is next to impossible to crane your head in there to look at it, what I did was take a photo of it with the phone held by the brake pedal, which gave me a good look at the unit. Then it was easy to unplug the pink harness and connect the wires as described. I did not splice into the wires. I just tinned the ends of the blue and green harness wires with solder. This made them into stiff pins which I squeeze inserted directly into the pink connector into the same holes as the existing wires. To ensure that it does not come out, I used a wire tie to tightly hold the new wire to the existing harness and create a small wire arc to maintain pressure into the harness holes. It works like a charm, and no splicing was required. Overall the job took me about 4 hours, but I took my time and did it really slowly and carefully. Another tool I found handy was a fish tape to fish the wire over the gas tank on the underside. Sadly, looking under the truck I realize I have a good amount of frame rust. This despite taking it in for the rust treatment TSB last year. Either they did a terrible job, or this thing is just designed to rust.
  7. Got both the TonnoPro and BedRug. The Bedrug is awesome, very happy with the fit and finish. Installation instructions could be better. The Tonnopro: - Arrived with a concealed dent in the aluminium; likely shipping damage. The aluminium is covered by vinyl. The vinyl is not torn, but I'm afraid it will fray eventually at the dent. - Also, the last section by the tailgate does not close tight, as the clamps are too far away from the tailgate and you can pry it up pretty easily. - The extras they ship in the package (tailgate seal, cleaner, gloves), seem to be cheap - of the bargain bin variety. I emailed Tonnopro about both the damage and the tailgate closing issue. In their first response, they completely ignored the issue with shipping damage, and just responded with a canned message to modify the cover by moving the clamps further back. I suppose they know about the design defect with the tailgate - hence the canned message. When I asked again via email about the shipping damage, I let them know I am willing to keep the cover, if they will send me a note in writing that failure down the road in the vinyl will be fully covered by warranty. Instead of addressing the issue, they simply asked me to contact the selling dealer for an RMA. Altogether, I'm not happy with the cover, or their customer service. I've contacted the dealer - TonneauCovers4Less. We shall see. I hate to say look elsewhere for a better product, because having read this thread, this issue with poor quality and customer service seems to be reported with several manufacturers. **** UPDATE **** TonneauCovers4Less responded the next business day, contacted the manufacturer and got me a note that I can attach to my warranty records documenting the transit damage. They kept me up to date on their contact with the manufacturer and got it resolved. I'm keeping the cover and in a good place, all said. I will update once I adjust the cover to see if I can fix the tailgate issue.
  8. Having read through this full thread, and never having owned a tonneau cover before, I have to conclude that this whole tonneau business is run like a cottage industry - products of questionable quality, resellers who are mostly mom and pop shops. Lucky to get something that does not leak etc. Quite disappointing really. I just ordered the TonnoPro Hard cover and the Bedrug... keeping my fingers crossed I get my order and its not defective.
  9. Typo perhaps? overstored.com does not exist. I usually check resellerratings.com. By the way, autoanything.com gets great reviews here, but they have a different story at resellerratings http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Auto_Anything
