  1. Hey guys, So I have been reading online, watching YouTube videos and trying to figure out what I need to do to upgrade my steering wheel. I posted somewhere else and I got conflicting information to say the least. To try to keep this as short as possible my truck is a 2017 GMC Sierra WT 1500 and only has cruise control on the steering wheel. I recently checked on Summit Racing and they had one 'upgrade' left in stock so I decided to pull the trigger. So I may have put the cart before the horse but I was told that as long as it was not heated the new controls should simply work right out of the box. The new one has the dash cluster controls and the radio controls on the back. However, more recently I was told that if my truck does not have radio controls right now I could not simply add a new steering wheel, plug it in and gain that functionality. I also saw that I may need to replace the clock spring as well. Anyway, I was hoping someone here could clear this up for me or tell me what I need to do myself to confirm compatibility. I thought about just installing the new steering wheel without the air bag, plugging the battery back in and seeing if the controls work before reinstalling the air bag since it seems that is the hardest thing to get off but I also do not want it to through a code or cause me other kinds of issues. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! This is a link to the wheel I bought off Summit Racing just in case. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ADO-84483746
  2. Hey guys, I was wondering how many of you guys use something like the FilterMag on your oil filters and what you think about them? I have always swapped out my regular drain plug for one that is magnetic. When I swapped it out on my old truck I was both surprised and concerned about the stuff it would catch. I am notorious for thinking about things too much. Anyway I already ordered one of these expensive FilterMags for the outside of my oil filter. You can see videos on YouTube of how they clearly catch and hold stuff to the shell of the filter. Having this in mind, I was thinking about how this magnet may catch this stuff. These magnets are known for being very strong, both so they stay in place on the filter and can actually grab onto particulates. However, I am now wondering if it is possible that these magnets are actually pulling the metal particulates through the paper filter? If this is possible it would mean that you are making things worse for yourself because you are letting particulates that would otherwise be caught by the paper filter and allowing them to go back into the engine. I have also seen people say things like they use cow magnets inside of their oil filter and just pull them out, wipe them off and place them into the new filter. I have two problems with using any magnets inside of the oil filter. The first being if it is possible that the magnet gets hot and loses some magnetic strength and can get sucked into the engine. I would imagine this is very unlikely but could easily cause catastrophic damage if at all possible. The next concern is that the magnet inside the oil filter will act as the first point of filtration and attract any particles. Therefore, not allowing the paper filter the chance to do what it is intended for first and allowing the magnet to hopefully get out the smaller particulates that people seem so concerned about in the first place. I know there are some knowledgeable people here so I was hoping for a discussion. I am getting ready to change my oil in my 2017 GMC Sierra 5.3 for the first time. I have not put that many miles on it but it has been about a year since I changed it so I want to go on and take care of it. I have 0W-20 Mobile 1 here so that is what is going in it this time but I am also open to what you guys may be using as well. I know it has been talked about a lot in this community.
  3. Thanks Cam, Mine is definitely not as bad as the video as of yet. However, like I said it sort of sounds more like a diesel engine than a gasoline on though lol. Another reason it is troubling is because mine barely has over 20,000 miles on it. Have you had good luck with yours did you delete the AFM through modification, a device like the Range or something else? The only thing I have done for my truck is install a catch can, which does seem to catch a lot of garbage.
  4. Hey guys, I have always received great feedback from this website. So lately I have noticed that my engine is making a 'ticking' noise. I know this is associated with the lifters failing. I have been trying to look around and figure out if I have something to worry about. I may take like a minute long video so you guys can hear for yourselves. However, there is definitely a 'ticking' present, I would almost describe it as as diesel knock. I already have a project car, so really do not want another project right now. The truck is still under warranty and need to get my paperwork to figure out what it says exactly. Is this something that GM would recognize as an issue and be under warranty? I am hoping at least part of this is in my head. The truck has just over 20,000 miles on it now. Any feedback and advice would be great. I also installed a catch can on it within the last year that some of you may remember. I have seen people say to replace the entire lifter assembly the push rods with quality after market stuff and it resolves the issue entirely. However, since I am still under warranty I do not want to even consider anything like that right now. Anyone that has had luck with this is welcome to chime in though, it may be something I consider in the future. So hear is a video of a Mazda with the same clicking sound as my truck. My truck may not be as bad yet but this is definitely the sound it is making.
  5. I realize this is old but GM would not combine any deals with the Season of Values event. I contacted Costco about it as well and they said they would get back to me. They did but not with much information, I remember them saying something like each individual dealer may be different. However, Costco told me it obviously could not be combined with certain offers. At the time I was looking to purchase a GM truck and unfortunately none of them would accept the Season of Values with other offers. In a way it is understandable because it was around the holidays and I know GM had a bunch of offers and I think the Employee Pricing was one of them. My personal experience was none of the GM dealers seemed to want to deal with me after mentioning the Season of Values promotion. I am not sure if it cuts into their commission or what. It sucked pretty bad because I thought it was going to be a way to stack up a nice deal for something I wanted to do anyway.
  6. Hey guys, My truck has towing mirrors on it. Some of you might remember that I was interested in swapping them out when I got the truck or trading them at first. However, I have actually grown to like them. Anyway, my passenger side tow mirror keeps extending with normal driving. It is not a huge inconvenience but from time to time I need to go over and press it back in. It has never came out more than an inch and that is if I let it go for a long time. I was looking around but could not find a whole lot. Is there something I can adjust to prevent this from happening?
  7. Good information to know. I know I should have did research to figure something like this out. To be honest, I just thought it would be a cool project and would add some extra light. Now I am going to want my lights to include J583 lol. Anyway, I was surprised to see that there is not a lot available when it comes to these lights. I thought there would be several after market people making them but it looks like this type of fog lamp is rare. If anyone finds anything let me know. I am not certain if mine are called something specific or something and that is what I am missing or what. I went out and got under the truck the other day and could not see anything. I am going to have to wait until I can drive it up on my large ramps and take a light up there.
  8. I just now noticed this. I do not know if I missed the email or what. Thanks for the response. By wire dongle do you mean like an open coupler I could plug and play these lights directly into? No, I tried to look but it was a pretty cold day, I know there were a lot of covers and crap at first glance, I will take a better look next time I am out there. I cannot find any videos or guides to help with this specific install. I just want to make certain that something seemingly simple does not turn into the front of the truck torn apart and two months of work if you know what I mean.
  9. Again post #6 by user Silverado-Hareek on the first page of the following thread. Anyway, I am just trying to figure out whether there is any truth or anyone else has had a similar experience. Also yes, after I get done with my next free oil change I will probably do it myself for the life of the truck. I have read a lot of people post about having problems all types of problems with the AFM shifting rough. Every now and then mine will give a slight bang, stutter or something similar. However, I have been told it is nothing to worry about and it does not particularly bother me and usually anything like this would bother me. So far I feel a lot better after getting a catch can on it and the AFM does not bother me personally right now and would hate to change that with my oil choice. Also I am sort of making this ahead of time, as if I put something in there that is full synthetic and a problem does arise then I can consider swapping it over to something else. I also remember the same guy (Project Farm) found that Amazon Basics and I think Kirkland Signature "beat" Mobil 1 in his tests. I know I can get either of those much cheaper, I see the Kirkland ones on sale at Costco all the time.
  10. 1.) I am no oil expert but all the ones I have ran into so far (Mobil 1, Amazon Basics, Castrol, Kirkland Signature) have always looked very thin/transparent. I try to use full synthetic in any modern engine as I think it really helps. However, my biggest gripe with it is I sometimes have trouble seeing where it is on the dipstick as opposed to traditional oil for this previous reason. 2.) So this truck calls for a full grade synthetic 0W-20 correct? I guess I could always call them and ask what they used, but if they used a 5W-30 blend or something I doubt they would be honest with me. 3.) I am certain you have seen the post Grump unless you are referring to something else. Anyway it is post #6 on the first page of this thread by user "Silverado-Hareek". https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/191403-best-oil-for-the-53/#comments
  11. This is what I found. I could not locate it anywhere online.
  12. Hey guys, I know there are several threads on this already, including one that is several pages long. I believe that I first read here that many people (including GM dealers) are using a synthetic blend by ACDelco for their pickups. So I just got one of my first free oil changes done at my local dealer and I noticed the oil definitely does not look like full synthetic. Also I have noticed that the oil level is getting a little on the low end of the safe operating level on the dipstick. So now I am wondering what type of oil to put in it. I know this is a hotly debated topic and hope I do not start anything. Also I remember trying to find the "ACDelco Synthetic Blend" and did not have any luck for 0W-20. I have a catch can on my truck that is removing a good deal of crap and making me feel at least a little better. I remembering some people saying they have had better luck with different oils and such. I have always just used Mobil 1 over the years. I think I remember reading someone claiming that the full synthetic based oil was making the AFM transition rough and after they went to the blend it was smooth again. Anyone know if there is any truth to this and where I can purchase this oil?
  13. Hey guys, I was looking at a way to make my lights broadcast a little further and just basically have more visibility at night. I noticed my truck is not very similar to many others out there, not sure if I would call it 'rare' but definitely a lack of information on it. I will leave some pictures of my truck here so you guys can see what I am talking about. These lights are more rectangular horizontal shapes and the ones that I see being installed and more common are the square vertical ones. To be clear, this is something I want to add to my truck and looking for feedback and recommendations. 1.) Is there an RPO code that tells me specifically about these lights? As in if it is prewired to install OEM or aftermarket lights? 2.) Can I install them and have the functionality I want? As in a separate switch, or will they only come on when my lights/high beams are on etc? 3.) Like I said I have not been able to personally locate an install on a setup like mine, does anyone know how difficult it is or what I can expect? Maybe even someone knows of a guide showing an install similar to that of mine? 4.) On an unrelated note I am planning to finally get remote start in my truck. I was told by the dealer that my truck is 'remote start ready', I think it is (AQQ). He said I could expect to pay between $350 and $400. I heard that you cannot program them yourself but you can purchase as cheaper kit and only need to pay labor. Anyone have any advice about this or anything else I should be aware of when letting the dealer do this? He said the kit also comes with a hood latch sensor so the truck cannot be running if the hood latch is open or something. Also forgot to mention I was doing some looking around and like I said was not able to find much. However, I did come across these. Does anyone know if there is a GM part number or could the eBay ones be okay? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pair-2016-2017-2018-GMC-Sierra-1500-LED-Bumper-Fog-Lights-Driving-Lamps-w-Switch-/132969104657
