Stock or quiet Muffler with Headers?
RaptorEater replied to RaptorEater's topic in 2014-2019 Engine, Driveline, & Exhaust
So here is an update. I ended up buying a $50 muffler from my local muffler shop. The brand is Flow II 22" muffler. It is "straight through". At first I thought it was way too quiet. Almost sounded stock even with my headers but after driving for 2 weeks it has really started to sound a lot better. I love the sound. Ended up being almost exactly what I wanted. Only cost me $130 installed and I can not tell any difference with power. Sometimes I think it even runs a little stronger. Maybe a little back pressure helped? I've heard this argument many times before wether back pressure helps or hurts on V8 engines. What do you guys think? Thanks -

Yea the only difference is that I have the Magnaflow resonator/muffler so still prob a bit louder than the Borla muffler with stock resonator. Someone mentioned earlier that I should go with the 2007-2013 6.2L muffler which I do like the sound of. I used to have a 2013 Denali and thought they definitely sounded good compared to the 5.3L stock exhaust. Anyone know the difference in the 2014+ 5.3L vs 6.2L exhaust? -

Ok here is a better video of what my truck sounds like at mid RPM. This high pitch raspy sound is what im trying to get rid of. I have a friend that has a stock 2015 6.2L exhaust (muffler, resonator) for $80 which seems like a pretty good deal to me. Wondering if I should put both the muffler and resonator on, or just the muffler, or just the resonator.... Done hours of video searches and can not find anything that really helps me. Thanks for any info that may help me make my decision! -

Now that i look back on my video i realize that the exhaust is never making the loud raspy sound i am trying to eliminate. It sounds great at very low throttle and mid-high to high acceleration but somewhere right there in the middle it sounds terrible. Heading out to make a better video now. -

The link isn't working for me. I love the sound you get from the headers I just want to learn the best place to tame it to not lose power and be left with a nice crisp sound. The cats, the resonator, the muffler?? -

I bought the truck with the headers. But no issues that I can see. -

Thank you! Loving that sound! Would you happen to have a rev or driving video? I wish I could find a video with just an OEM Resonator w/ headers and no cats. I'm also curious would I lose more power by putting a stock muffler on it or a stock resonator? I feel like I'm getting somewhere! Thanks guys -

Would you happen to have a video of yours? What are you referring to as OEM if you replaced the muffler? Just the piping and resonator? Definitely sounds like something I'm looking for. Thanks! -

Thanks for all of the replies! So i guess the question is should i try a resonator, stock 2014+ 5.3 muffler, or 07-13 6.2 muffler? -
I am looking to quiet down my exhaust, by a lot. I currently have American Racing longtube headers, no cats, and a Magnaflow resonator ("race muffler" is what they call it on their website). The truck is way too loud. Wakes my neighbors up even cranking it in the garag. I think it sounds great when your pinned to the floor but can not stand the super raspy tones that it sends out at mid RPM. I am wanting to leave the longtubes w/o cats and add a muffler just cant decide which one to go with. I'm wanting to go much quieter so was wondering how much power I would actually lose if I were to install the stock exhaust with longtubes and no cats. Trying to describe the sound I'm looking for is very difficult but I feel like the stock muffler or maybe one that quiets it down a lot would be what I'm looking for. The only thing I can think of to describe is the sound of a stock Z06 Corvette. Obviously it would take a lot more to achieve such an amazing sound but hopefully you get the picture. To narrow it down, I'm looking for a quiet, inexpensive, exhaust that isn't going to make me lose power. The ultimate goal for the exhaust is to make it quiet for cruising and have an electric cut out for when I really want to open her up. Thanks in advance! Looking forward to getting this right! Below is a video of what it sounds like now.

Here is my 2014 Silverado High Country that I picked up a few months ago. I am not into lowered trucks with big wheels but I just could not pass up the deal I got on this. My friend is the used car sales manager at Planet Ford in Spring, Tx and they got this truck on trade in and couldn't sell it at the dealership because it had too many mods and no catalytic converters so he gave it to me for wholesale! The truck is "UNDER CONSTRUCTION". I will be raising it back to stock height with a leveling kit or maybe a 3.5in- 4in lift Adding the 22in OEM Ck158 wheels (if I can ever find a set) LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN! Adding a muffler to it because it currently has long tube headers with a small resonator. SUPER LOUD but going to sound nice when I tame it. The front end is also a 2500 conversion. Haven't even taken the Duramax badges off yet. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK! Remember this isn't my style but it does look pretty awesome as it stands. -
If anyone knows where to find OEM Ck158s let me know! I love those wheels!
