  1. Interesting posts! I agree with lots that's been said. I'm still not sure what would make me feel safe again. A while ago I went into a gun shop (with someone) and I was kinda shocked about two things. First of all the guy behind the counter said they have been busy like crazy. Second of all the age of the customers in store at this moment was max mid-twenty, likely younger. (Not only) In my area is so much going on and I stopped watching the news because I'm sick of it!! I'm starting to think that I have to get used to not feeling safe.
  2. ...did I mention it before? I am going to get a gun license AND a dog. Put down a deposit on my pup already I'll keep you posted about the gun class and come back for more questions.... I guess.
  3. I don't think so. In fact I believe most anti-gun people have good reasons. Maybe it's you who does not understand or is not willing to understand and accept. Which is fine. I have been anti-gun for many years and it had nothing to do with me not trying. For most part it had to do with the knowledge that it's not a perfect solution. People tend to ignore the law, even those who call themself law obiding citizens - I would bet my hat that most soccer moms tell you they are law obiding citizens, yet they are the ones going 50 or 60 in a School zone. Or using the phone while driving with their kids on the back seat. The law says No! but they don't care. Great stuff. No, I don't like thosecareless mothers to have a gun. Learn basics and respect first. There is not one person in this world who does obey the law at all times, I don't. And a lot of them don't obey because they can. It's even trendy. The real scary ones (to me) are those who do not understand the law! How many idiots do not fully understand "your" second amendment? Or the phrase "stand your grounds"? So yes, I find it very scary when stupid people do have a gun. So my concern goes into different directions. I don't give a rats apple about the second amendment. People use it like it has no meaning. But it has. I would wish people would understand and care and then get guns because there will always be the POS that deserves a bullet or two. Getting a gun means a lot of responsibility. If you wanna play big boy...go find a star trek meeting. Again, I am not interested in protecting my TV or car or silver forks, that's just stuff. I'm looking for protection just for myself.
  4. ...this dead POS was known to police, nice long history including break & enter, uttering threats and so on... Makes me feel much better. On the other hand glad he's gone! What is wrong with people.....
  5. Well, thanks to all of you! Yesterday morning, just when I was about to leave for work police, ambulance etc flew by, down the road. Later on I found out a dead person, was found on the road by a city worker. Just a few meters from my home. IHIT is investigating as it seems to be a(nother) homicide. Awesome! I do not live in the States so it's not that easy to just get a gun and I wouldn't just go shopping for one anyways. Since I like to be outdoors as much as possible I tend to get a dog and proper training for the dog and I. I'll also attend a weapon / gun training class and go from there. And maybe I'll book a selfdefense class. Somebody mentioned that I might be someone that can't get used to the thought of hurting someone else. I think that's very true - looking back... With all the assaults and shootings around me I think twice before leaving for my (long) walks. I know that having a dog or a gun won't be the one and only solution but it might give me back my confidence. The taser is an interesting thought. I'll look into that as well! Thanks again btw please, I'm not interested in "it's your right" blabla
  6. ...just a quick question inbetween: How many of you have ever been in a "home defense" situation? And what do you mean by saying "home defense"? Just asking to clarify!
  7. Thanks again! Since I had pets pretty much throughout my life I know its a huge commitment. Something I like, even enjoy. A dog is still on my mind, it would fit my life style. The biggest issue is having enough time. I need to figure that one out first. In regards to the gun... I guess it's the unknown that scares me so the only way to figure out if it could be an option for me is to try. What's good for one person could be not working for another. I will open up more.
  8. Thanks everyone. Got lots to think about. I would prefer a dog, not sure if it's possible timewise, I'll check that. Would suit me better, since I am a lot outside all by myself. I guess I would love the training we both would get. I read a lot of people with even years of expierence and got shot because of being ignorant (look at this one mom who is a total gun freak and got shot in her car by her kid :/ ). So if this becomes a real option for me training is a must, especially since I have no expierence.
  9. Good point - that the knife could have been taken away. I guess I am just scared because maybe reality is that we have to protect ourselfs and what belongs to us. Sometimes it is easier to avoid this thought. And maybe I just can't picture myself right now going to a shooting range. I don't know. I don't know what to expect I guess. Do you go to a range on a regular basis? Do you have to do training throughout the years?
  10. Hey guys, so here's a topic I used to avoid for all my life. But things change. I live in a city where shootings almost daily occur (thanks to drugs business), where home invasions are normal and where stabbings are on the rise as well as (sex) assaults (on women in parks even on University/College Campus). I've been in a small community in Cali years ago and one night I got so f...g scared because "someone walked" around the house in the middle of the night. ...anyways... One option would be to just leave town and move to a place that might be safer. For job reasons and because I like the nature aorund me the mentioned option is out the window. Another option is to get a gun. I have to let you know that there where times when I was afraid of my building manager (stalking & harassment) and when I took a knife with me when I left my house for my "walkings". I used to have problems to go to bed and fear was my daily partner. For family reasons I left the country and I felt better. When I went back home everything seemed fine. But since there is no way to avoid news and because the violence just happens onyour door steps the fear keeps coming back. I got my daughter into a selfdefense class when she became 16 and she is a tough cookie. But we all know that selfdefense only works so much. In Canada laws are quite different and besides here is what I was thinking over the last years. I would always smile about the thought of the so called law obiding citizen. Because by law their guns are supposed to be locked up. But often that's not the case. I mean it doesn't make sense to me anyways because someone who's coming into my house won't wait for me to get my gun out of my gun safe. So for me a gun only works when I would have it to close me, which is not allowed. I couldn't bring it to my walks or put it under my sheets. I also wonder how I would react in certain situations. There are so many crazy people out there, scary people. Would I over react and possibly shoot even it's unnecessary? I don't even know if I would feel better having a gun. I felt better with the knife though....well, I gave it up because at one point I thought this going way to far. With all the if and how in my head I am just totally confused and frustrated. As you can see, this is not a pro or anti gun subject. This is a fred and I was hoping to get some thoughts from you. Thanks!
