As reported by the Associated Press and the Detroit News, reactions to General Motors announcement of four truck plant closures has not been good. Notably, the Oshawa plant in Ontario, which employs 2,600 members of the CAW, has seen high profile protests of the planned shutdown. Workers blockaded Canadian GM Headquarters over the weekend and planned to keep a high, but law abiding presence for some time.

 General Motors announced today their intentions to close four truck/suv plants due to a decline in sales. GM's Oshawa, Moraine, Janesville, and Toluca locations will cease production by 2010 or sooner if demand continues to drop. In addition to the closings, the Pontiac and Flint plants will also have shifts removed to cut production.

 General Motors, in a press release this morning, has indicated that they have placed the HUMMER brand under what they call "Strategic Assessment". This places the future of the brand in limbo as GM decides what is the best course. Almost all options are on the table, with none of them small. Outcomes range from a full revamp of the Hummer lineup to a partial or complete sale of the marque.

Move to bring production in line with market demand
Company to explore options to expand car production
DETROIT – GM announced today that it is eliminating one shift of production at its full-size pickup truck assembly plants in Pontiac, Mich.; Flint, Mich.; and Oshawa, Ontario; and its full-size SUV assembly plant in Janesville, Wis. The decisions were made to bring production capacity more in line with market demand.
Under this plan, approximately 88,000 units of full-size pickup and 50,000 units of full-size SUV production will be removed from GM’s North American production capacity for the remainder of the 2008 calendar year.
