As reported by the Associated Press and the Detroit News, reactions to General Motors announcement of four truck plant closures has not been good. Notably, the Oshawa plant in Ontario, which employs 2,600 members of the CAW, has seen high profile protests of the planned shutdown. Workers blockaded Canadian GM Headquarters over the weekend and planned to keep a high, but law abiding presence for some time.
Employees at the plant and who are participating in the protest are prepared to go the long haul in order to keep the plant open. CAW leaders indicate that a "next phase" of action will begin next week to increase the pressure on GM to keep the plant, which manufactures the Silverado and Sierra, open. Canadian politicians are also feeling the heat. CAW President Buzz Hargrove is proposing legislation that would require any automobile sold in Canada to be made in Canada. The protests were sparked when GM annouced last week their intention to close the Oshawa plant before 2010 . Source [The Detroit News ] |
