Vehicle Review: 2005 HUMMER H2 SUT

Fifty gallons of gas, three parking tickets from a jealous college safety guard, and the envy of every single man we drove past.  It’s been a while since we had such an eventful review.  There is no middle ground when talking to someone about the HUMMER H2 SUT.  Either they think it’s the oil eating spawn of the devil or the coolest thing since Transformers went new school.  From its distinct truck bed, massive tires, and box styling, there’s nothing you can really say the H2 SUT (or regular SUV) really looks like.  Good or bad, you pay a lot to get that HUMMER name.  Let’s see if you get the $57,000 sticker price worth….

Exterior + Performance:
I’ll have to admit, the first few days in the SUT had me absolutely dumbfounded why anyone would want a three foot bed on the back of their H2. Not only was it small, but cut out a 6th seat and a lot of cargo space that you could have gotten on the SUV.  It’s pretty much useless except for a cooler or ‘cold’ storage if you have a cover.  Not to mention that you don’t get a price break over the SUV.  But the more I sat back and looked at it, the more it made perfect sense.  The reason someone would buy an SUT over an SUV was exactly the same reason they would be looking at buying a HUMMER in the first place. The way it looks!  Obviously, when buying a HUMMER, practicality isn’t first on the shopping list or even on the shopping list at all.  Using that train of thought, the SUT fits the bill perfectly.  The “truck” style body grew on me so much; I’ve actually come to prefer it to the SUV.  It has a much less bloated and “bread box” look to it.  The proportions are more even, the wheels look larger, the military look isn’t wasted on a sleek SUV exterior, but on a rough and tough truck body.
The frame the SUT rides on is exactly the same as the SUV.  There’s not an option on the SUV you can’t get on the SUT.  Both run on a 122.7 inch wheelbase, and both a 203.6 inches long.  The only difference is the bed and Avalanche like mid-gate. Our tester was adored with a bed mat, chrome appearance package, and chrome tubular steps (which one journalist before us nicely bent up towards the body on the passenger side).  The color our H2 came dressed in is officially called Red Metallic, however to us and everyone else it was more “Burgundy” than red.  We’ve seen brighter red SUTs sitting on dealership lots, however on the HUMMER website it does not list it.
