GMC Delivers Best Sales Month of the Year in August

Terrain, Acadia, Sierra and Yukon drive 23rd straight month of retail sales gains

DETROIT – GMC delivered its best sales month of the year and its 23rd consecutive month of retail gains in August, with sales to individual customers up 26 percent and total sales up 40 percent year over year. The brand made significant gains in New York, Seattle and Chicago.

“Consumer demand for the fuel-efficient Terrain and Acadia crossovers has been consistently strong month after month and August was no exception,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Buick and GMC Sales and Service. “The same can be said for our Professional Grade Sierra trucks and Yukon SUVs, which delivered their best months of the year.”

Terrain again led the sales growth in August by achieving a 72-percent increase in retail sales and an 88-percent increase in total sales compared to 2010. The smaller SUV’s retail sales have grown 56 percent year to date, and its total sales have risen 61 percent for the same period.

Acadia also excelled in August, with retail sales up 45 percent and total sales up 54 percent year over year. The crossover’s retail sales have risen 22 percent year to date, and its total sales have grown 26 percent for the same period.

Terrain and Acadia crossover combined represent 45 percent of GMC’s retail sales calendar year to date, and are in close competition for the highest conquest rate, with Acadia narrowly leading. More than half of all Acadia and Terrain customers are coming from non-GM brands.  Forty-five percent of all GMC buyers come from non-GM brands.

For its best month of the year, the Sierra lineup’s retail sales grew 11 percent year over year in August, with total sales up 14 percent, driven by increased demand for heavy duty models. Total HD sales are up 23 percent year to date.

Sierra 3500HD recently won PickupTrucks.com’s “Heavy Duty Hurt Locker” comparison test, a grueling showdown among industry heavyweights that included towing 19,400-pound fifth-wheel trailers up and over some of the most demanding grades in the United States.

Combined Yukon/XL retail sales were up 16 percent in August, and combined total sales – retail and fleet – were up 61 percent year over year. The SUV’s retail sales have risen 8 percent year to date, and its total sales have grown 17 percent for the same period.
